Nokia N900 tablet previewed with Maemo 5, GPS

Nokia is publicizing its N900 mobile computer today as well as the Maemo 5 operating system it runs on.  Maemo 5 has closer ties to a desktop operating environment than the smartphone OS Symbian, according to Nokia, allowing multiple applications to run at one time.  The N900, which will be previewed at Nokia World on September 2, has a 3.5-inch 800 x 480 touchscreen, runs on a 600 MHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor with OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics acceleration, has 1 GB of RAM, assisted GPS with Ovi Maps and automatic geotagging, Bluetooth, a 5.0 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, cellular connectivity, 32 GB of internal storage, and much more (full spec sheet ).  The Nokia N900 is expected to ship in select markets this October for 500 euros (US$712) before taxes and subsidies.

Nokia’s use of Maemo 5 with the N900 completes a trio of announcements this week, each involving a different Nokia-supported operating system.  The Nokia Booklet 3G , the company’s entry into the netbook market, runs on Microsoft Windows, while the Nokia 5230 smartphone sticks with Nokia’s smartphone platform, Symbian.
