Last update: September 17, 2009 This list of WYSIWYG rich text web editors is being maintained as a general resource for developers who want to add a richer editing experience to web based applications. In order to be included, all editors must work in place in a browser window, either by replacing a textarea or by adding their own editable fragment. WYSIWYG page designers that live outside the web page are in a different category. This resource is a living document, and we always welcome comments and updates. Please let us know if you have any comments, additional information or corrections. While we list both open source and commercial editors in the tables below, we do not endorse or guarantee your results with any editor. Note: This list was originally started with editors from a list maintained by Paul Browning which was located at the University of Bristol's website at www.bris.ac.uk/is/projects/cms/ttw/ttw.html . Paul Browning has asked if I could update and maintain this list, as he no longer has the time, and is no longer connected to the University of Bristol. I greatly appreciate the time and effort that he put into collecting this information, and will continue to host it and update it. In beta, and last update was May 2003. Bitflux Editor Apache Software License Demo + + - Firefox/Mozilla. Usable with XHTML & XML Documents. In production release. Version 1 released March 2003, last updated December 2004. Version 2 planned for winter of 2005. bpEditor GPL - - - Windows only. In production release. Last update was August 2001. CKeditor LGPL Demo + + + Very powerful and easy to integrate, and includes all the bells and whistles, such as spell checking and image upload. Successor to FCKeditor. CMFVisualEditor GPL Part of the Plone Collective project, which includes various tools for the Plone and/or Zope Frameworks. In early beta, and last updated March 2003. ComposIte MPL - - - Anything that will run Mozilla. ComposIte is a chrome overlay which enables a streamlined Mozilla Editor for html composition in textareas. Once installed you'll be able to edit a textarea the wysiwyg Mozilla Composer module. Broken by Mozilla editing in 1.3 and above. ConceptRTE Demo + - - Evolution of Kevin Roth's Cross-Browser Rich Text Editor with some enhancements but without Spell Checker or HTML code view. Sub-project of ConceptCMS . Cross-Browser Rich Text Editor Public Domain Demo + - - Kevin Roth's award winning Cross-Browser Rich Text Editor is mostly a demonstration project, but is an excellent starter for other browsers and is fully public domian. DoJo Editor AFL Demo + + A very slick looking extension of the Dojo framework. Haven't had the time to fully inventigate, but well worth loooking at further. Not 100% sure of which browsers are supported - have only tested Firefox and IE so far. eArea LGPL + Created because of problems ... finding a WYSIWYG editor for Safari and OS X Dashboard widgets. Easy Web Editor (EWE) LGPL Windows only. Working on cross-platform version. Ekit GPL Open source Java HTML web editor. Cross platform - does not list browser support. More of a stand alone Java application than most of this editors. Epoz ZPL Demo + + A cross-browser-wysiwyg-editor for Zope (and Plone ). Epoz allows you to edit Zope-objects with a wysiwyg-editor. No plugins are required. CSS support. FCKeditor LGPL Demo + + + Very powerful and easy to integrate, and includes all the bells and whistles, such as spell checking and image upload. ASP.NET control written in C# that seems in be quite popular and is actively developed and enhanced. Last updated in May 2005. htmlArea BSD + + Very popular and flexible editor. Development seems to have stopped, and the htmlArea.com site lists htmlArea as "discontinued". Active development is being carried on with Xinha (see below) , a successor to htmlArea. HTML Text Editor LGPL Windows only. Last updated August 2002 . HTML Text Editor Applet GPL HTOpenEdit ? Windows only IE Editor for Zope GPL Windows only but not Zope only. Extended to work with Zope Presentation Templates and CMF/Plone ( CMFVisualEditor ). Looks like it is in beta and not being actively developed, but website is unclear. IEWedit GPL Windows only. Replaced recently by RTWedit , which supports multiple browsers. IEMethod ? Windows only and Zope only js_edit ? Windows only, PHP. "This Project Has Not Released Any Files." Kupu BSD-style Demo + Kupu is a 'document-centric' open source client-side XHTML editor for Mozilla, Netscape and Internet Explorer. Inspired by Maik Jablonski's Epoz editor, it was originally written by Paul Everitt, Guido Wesdorp and Philipp von Weitershausen . Mozile MPL + - Moz illa I n l ine E ditor is an in-browser, context-sensitive, XHTML editor that allows a user to edit all or just specific editable sections of any XHTML page from the comfort of his own browser. Mozilla Rich Text Editing API No longer uses Midas name for trademark reasons MPL Demo Rich text editing control for Mozilla. This is NO LONGER CALLED MIDAS. See demo (you need Mozilla 1.3+). NetWedit GPL Netscape 4+ OEdit AGPL Demo The WYSIWYG online editor is for use with IE >5.5 on Windows clients - and Mozilla 1.3 and above. On MacOS the WYSIWYG online editor is only working in Mozilla 1.3 and above. The WYSIWYG online editor is NOT working in Opera and IE5. of_wysiwyg LGPL Windows only Online Content Editor Demo? It has the ability to convert HTML TEXTAREA fields or other HTML elements to editor instances. TinyMCE is very easy to integrate into other CMS systems. Opera browser support requres Opera 9.0 Preview 1 . TTW WYSIWYG Editor LGPL Demo - - + A web content editor for use in custom Content Management Systems (CMS). Web Wiz Rich Text Editor ? Demo - + ASP based rich editor requires Windows based server but cross platform clients. Full set of features for textarea replacement. Created by Bruce Corkhill. Last updated March 7, 2005. Whizzywig GPL Demo + + Looks like a fairly light weight (as in size, not as in features) rich text editor. Last updated December 23, 2005. widgEditor GPL but donation requested Demo - + Intentionally very light weight (as in size, not as in features) rich text editor with fewer features than many others, but very easy to integrate. Last updated March 9, 2005, but update due out soon. Wikiwyg LGPL Demo Very new and preliminary, but exciting WYSIWYG editor focused on use with Wikis. Iffy in Internet Explorer, better in Firefox so far. WYMeditor Dual MIT and GPL Demo + - Still in early stages, this editor takes a somewhat different approach by showing some tags even while it is mostly WYSIWYG. Refers to itself as WYSIWYM (what you see is what you mean). Only just barely fits the definition of TTW editing, but may be good for some structured uses. wysiwyg_web_edit ? Wysiwyg Pro From $47 Demo Wysiwyg Pro supports all Internet Explorer versions from 5.0 up, Netscape 7.1 and Mozilla 1.4. Wysiwyg Pro is pure JavaScript and HTML in the browser, it requires no browser plug-ins, ActiveX controls or Java Applets. You can configure the editor to generate either HTML 4.01 or well formed XHTML 1.0. In XHTML mode Wysiwyg Pro will convert your documents to XHTML even if they weren't originally. When text is pasted from Microsoft Word alot of unnecessary markup is carried across; the Paste from Word button solves this by removing word markup before pasting the text into your page. Currently Wysiwyg Pro is only available as a PHP package. Generates clean XHTML Strict or 1.1, and uses CSS for formatting, to ensure the clean separation of content from presentation. Markup generated by XStandard meets the most demanding accessibility requirements. Features include drag & drop file upload, spell checking and an image library that integrates tightly with your CMS. "Lite" version is free for commercial use.
