The new version of Google Maps is unbearably slow for me, both at home and at work.

It may be related to hardware acceleration issues. For Google Chrome (version 36), try this (no guarantees about older/newer versions):

1. Open Google Chrome and click on the Control Button -> Settings. Alternatively, you can directly access Settings by typing chrome://settings/ in Google Chrome’s address bar.

2. This will open the Settings Page. Scroll down until you see the Show Advanced Settings link and click on it.
