Echo buttons have been around for a little while now, but it was only recently that Amazon added the ability to use them to control your smarthome devices. This new feature will let you assign routines to your Echo buttons, essentially letting you control multiple smarthome devices at once with just the press of a button. Here’s how to set it all up.

Before you begin, this guide assumes that your Echo buttons are already up and running. If they aren’t already paired to your Echo, we have a guide that takes you through the process.

To assign an Echo button to a smarthome task, you have to create an Alexa Routine. If you’re not familiar with Routines, we have a handy guide on how to set them up. You’ll be following those same instructions when integrating your Echo button, but with a minor difference.

From the home screen of the Alexa app, start by tapping the menu button up in the top left corner of the screen.

Select “Routines” from the list of options.

Tap the “+” button in the top right corner to create a new routine. Unfortunately, you can’t edit an existing routine to add your Echo button.

Select “When This Happens” toward the top.

Tap the “Echo Button” option.

Next, you’ll select what happens whenever you press your Echo Button. Tap the “Add Action” option.

You can control all sorts of things with the Echo Button, even non-smarthome tasks. For this guide, we’ll be focusing on smarthome, so tap “Smart Home” on the list of options.

You can control a single device, multiple devices at once, or a specific scene that you have set up.

I want to be able to turn off my entire entertainment system with the press of the Echo Button, so I’ll select the “TV” scene that I created with my Logitech Harmony Hub.

Choose what you want the Echo Button to do when pressed. In this case, I want it to turn my entertainment system off. So I’ll tap to select “Off” on the toggle switch.
