Day 22 Can You Use I Bet

Hi, I’m Vanessa from speakenglishwithvanessa.com. Today, we are going to talk about one of the most use phrases that I use that my English students don’t know. It’s the phrase “I bet”. Let’s get started.

The phrase I bet means simply I could imagine or I think. I could imagine. I could imagine that you’re pretty sad because your dog died. But it’s much more casual and fluent thing to say, if you say “I bet that you were really sad when your dog died.” You’re talking and imagining someone’s emotions. I bet you are really sad when your dog died. I imagined that you were really sad. I don’t know, I’m not certain, but I bet you were really sad when your dog died. Or I bet you are hoping to get a raise at the end of the month. I don’t know that you’re getting a raise at the end of the month. I’m not certain. But I could say “oh, yes. I bet you want to get a raise at the end of the month.” I bet that you’re curious if you’re going to get a raise at the end of the month. It’s thinking about someone else’s emotion. It’s thinking about someone else’s thoughts.

The second way to use I bet is to think about something that might happen in the future. So you could say “I bet that I’m going to break my leg when I go skiing because I have terrible balance.” I bet that it’s going to happen. I think it will probably happen. I have a suspicion that it will probably happen. I bet I’m going to break my leg. I bet. Or you could say “I bet it’s going to rain today.” It is really cloudy. And that’s true. It is very cloudy. Actually, it’s raining right now. I bet it’s going to rain today, it’s really cloudy. If it’s only cloudy, if it’s not raining, like it is now, you could say “I bet it’s going to rain today.” I think it will probably rain today. It’s the same as I saying “I think it will probably rain today.” Maybe it will rain today. I bet that it’s going to rain today.

So, my question for you is “can you use I bet in a sentence that you think of?” In the comments below, I would like you to write a sentence using I bet. I bet that you were really sad when your dog died. I bet that it’s going to rain today. I bet. If you go over to my website here, you can see some more examples of how to use I bet. Thanks so much and I’ll talk to you later. Goodbye.
