Through her modeling and relief work, she soon became famous. Heather was in the prime of her life. But in august 1993, when she was just 25 years old, her life changed once again.
Heather was crossing a street in London when a police officer who was responding to an emergence crashed into her with his motorcycle. She was badly injured, breaking her left leg just below the knee. Unfortunately the doctors could not repair the damage. They had to amputate the leg, replacing it with an artifical leg.
As Heather got used to walking on an artificial leg, she discovered that the stump of her left leg continually changed shape. This meant getting frequent replacement legs and throwing away the old ones.As Heather thought about how wasteful this process was, she had an idea.
Heather remembered all the people in former Yugoslavia who had lost arms or legs in the war but couldn't afford artificial ones. Soon, she set up an organization to help deliver old artificial limbs, as well as food and medicine, to war-torn countries.
