UNDERSTANDING YOURSELF
A first step in developing your personal impact and presence is identifying what it is that you want to project to others.
l What are you strengths?
l What are your values?this will provide a clue to what really motivates and inspires you
l How do you want others to see you ?
l How do you want to be?
Real presence and impact comes from being congruent at all these levels.

Stress responses and impact consequences
To understand impact you need to understand your responses to stress.Stress responses are governed by our primitive brain functions and send us automatically into either a fight or flight mode.Handing stress badly can hold us back. These responses are easily recognisable and have a dramatic influence on how we come across.
Stress responses impact consequences
Raised hearbeat
l Feeling of panic
l Talking too quickly
Blood moves away from peripheral areas
l Unable to focus/listen clearly
l May be unable to pick up on cues and responses from your audience
The brain is focused on fight or flight
l Messages from your long-term memory aren’t communicated effectively to your short-term memory.leading to slow thinking and,in extreme cases, stage fright
Temperature changes
l From sweating/flushes to feeling extremely cold
Dry mouth
l Voice can be less expressive.can be difficult to get the words out
Emotional reaction
l Your become aggressive or submissive;less assertive
l Voice tone reflects the emotional reaction
l Body language changes into either defensive/protective responses(arms crossed, looking down, closed posture) or more aggressive response,eg finger pointing
If you can learn to manage these fears you can learn to manage your impact. The first step is to know your inner critic and then develop ways to overcome it.
