Named Colours

Specifying colours

You can specify colours in HTML and CSS by their colour name or by their RGB hexadecimal value, eg: 

    <font color="purple">     or     <font color="#800080">

In CSS you can also use RGB decimal values, eg:

    P { color: rgb(128,0,128); }

 

Using colour sets

When working with colour names, there are two colour sets you can use:  the VGA color set and the X11 colour names.

VGA colour set

The VGA colour set comprises 16 colours that can always be rendered correctly, regardless of the colour resolution of the user's display card. These colours are:

Fuchsia	Aqua	Yellow	White
Purple	Teal	Olive	Silver
Blue	Lime	Red	Gray
Navy	Green	Maroon	Black

X11 colour names

The X11 colour names are an extended set of colours  that are supported by Microsoft Internet Explorer (version 3.0+) and Netscape Navigator (versions 2.0+).  These colour names are represented in the following table, together with their corresponding Hex value, RGB value and Microsoft Access code number.  (Colours marked with an asterisk* are included in the VGA colour set).

 

To view a colour in more detail, click the colour's name in the third column.  The background will change to this colour and you will be able to see how the colour appears in relation to other colours in the list.

To return to a white background, just click the refresh button on your browser.
