Lifelines are drawn as a box with a dashed line descending from the center of the bottom edge. When a lifeline has an underline, it means that the lifeline represents a specific instance of a class in a sequence diagram, and not a particular kind of instance (i.e., a role). Simply put, instance names in sequence diagrams are underlined; roles names are not.
