1.Install
- 1.1).Start by updating the package index:
sudo apt-get update
- 1.2).Run the following command to install Git:
sudo apt install git-all
- 1.3).Verify the installation by typing the following command which will print the Git version:
git --version
2.Configuring Git
Now you have git installed, it is a good idea to set up your personal information that will be used when you commit your code.
- 2.1)The follow commands will set your git commit username and email address:
git config --global user.name "Your Name"
git config --global user.email "youremail@yourdomain.com"
- 2.2)To verify the configuration changes, type:
git config --list
The output should look something like this:
user.name=Your Name
user.email=youremail@yourdomain.com
- 2.3)The configuration settings are stored in the
~/.gitconfig
file:
[user]
name = Your Name
email = youremail@yourdomain.com
If you want to make further changes to your Git configuration, you can either use the git config
command or edit the ~/.gitconfig
file by hand.
