I have solved the problem by using an EasySSLProtocol which accepts self signed certificates. You can get more info at:
http://jakarta.apache.org/commons/httpclient/sslguide.html
But if these changes were to be added to the source code, here are my changes:
1) Modified the SeleniumInitializer. Here is the diff:
