Exhaustion of Natural Resources

Nowadays, there is a widespread concern over depletion of natural resources in China. Vast forests and prairies are decaying rapidly; and many river systems have dried up. Everything seems so scarce that we have neither clean water to drink nor fresh air to breathe..Then, how come we messed up with our environment?

Extensive studies show that three problems inversely affect our natural resources. First, population explosion has been depriving our land of anything available to meet the survival demands. And poverty further cripples the delicate environment. Next, “dirty” industries have been constantly polluting our air, our land, and our waters, resulting in extinction of an increasing number of wildlife species. Finally, the lax laws and regulations fail to stop over-exploiting our land. The country poor still depend on over-farming arid fields, over-grazing dry prairies, over-fishing lakes, and over-drawing mines. The results are disastrous.

In summary, over-exploitation of our land, industrial pollution and population explosion resulted in depletion of natural resources. Effective measures, including family planning, popularization of science and technology and education as well as reinforcement of laws, must be taken to correct the situation. We cannot afford such waste anymore because the sustainable development of mankind depends on the precious natural assets.
