The Definitive Guide To MySQL - 阅读手记2

这两天看的章节多是开发环境的配置以及工具的介绍，因此也没太多技术细节可以记录。不过还是总结了一些作者的话，一来学习E文，二来谈谈自己的看法：

1>Abbreviations n.缩写, 缩写词

2>...and then delves into [探究] the possibilities and limitations of MySQL.

3>Where there are servers, there are clients.
  这话显然套用 where there is a will there is a way. :)

4>MySQL is not a panacea [n. 万灵药].

5>The most popular of these is InnoDB, which will be described extensively [集中/大篇幅(讨论)] in this book.

6>Even for connoisseurs[鉴识家,鉴定家,内行] of MySQL it is a bit of a challenge to keep track of which version of MySQL is current...

7>Open source is often incorrectly interpreted to mean "without cost."
  对Open source的理解，看过几个作者写过，记得有一个说法是这样的：开源软件并不是免费的，而是说在提供软件的同时免费提供源代码而已，而用户有对源代码修改的权利。换句话说，针对不同应用范围，比如针对个人和企业用户的不同，在提供软件的时候是可以选择是否收取费用的；或者对于开源项目其文档是需要付费的，比如Java的那几个报表开源项目的文档就是需要付费的。

8>MySQL has thus developed into a quasi[a. 类似的,外表的] standard in the realm[n. 王国,领域] of Internet databases.

9>Not only millions of website developers, but also firms and organizations such as Associated Press,...,and Yahoo!have answered this question in the affirmative. If you choose MySQL, you will be in good company[nice word!].
  这话个人觉得是相当值得学习，in good company，假如你选择MySQL，那么有罗列的那么多优秀成功的公司与你一路相伴。没道理不加入这个行列，那就接着学MySQL，接着看这本书。:)

10>The question of under which os to run MySQL can easily lead to fisticuffs [争论os会引起纷争，fisticuffs:一掌，一拳], so strongly are opinions held. But we shall remain civil in this section.

11>If you have difficulties in understanding what is going on, please do not despair.
   我对国外作者的看法一贯都是：他们是以交流的姿态，而并非一种故弄玄虚、说教的姿态写作。经过他说这么一句话，这么一点，会让读者很明白如果目前理解不了正在讲述的内容是否会影响进一步的学习，从而及时调整心态，跳过去或许在不远的前方一下就会明白过来。知识并不往往具有明显的学习路径，好作者除了在书中呈现一种比较合理的路径之外，还需在必要的时候说些看似无关痛痒的话，及时让读者暂时有所舍弃，抓住重点。

12>Like any other specialized subject, the database world has its own argot [n.暗号，隐语]. Database vocabulary includes

the term data record for each line of the table above. Instead of columns one often speaks of fields.

13>the interfaces mysql and mysqli as two alternatives for communication with MySQL.
   这句话贴上来主要是alternatives的用法，不过还有一点：今天去书店翻了翻，发现中文版译文将interface翻译为界面，百思不得其解。个人觉得是不是使用“接口”更能达意一些。API翻译为编程界面？

14>To experienced MySQL users these programs are as necessary as a Swiss army knife is to a mountain climber.
