1. Digital communication system
Figure 1: A typical digital communication system block diagram (DCS)
- Information source generates messages for transmission which can be analog or digital.
- Formatting transforms the source information into digital symbols and also makes the information compatible with the signal processing within a DCS.
- Source encoding encodes the source information for more efficient transmission with little or no redundancy.
- Encryption prevents unauthorized users from deriving transmitted messages or injecting false messages into the DCS.
- Channel encoding encodes the source information for more reliability (anti-interference / error correction —> help SNR, reduce decoder complexity) so that better performance.
- Multiplexing and multiple access combine signals with different characteristics, signals from different sources to share a portion of the communication resource.
- Modulation is the process that converts the symbols to waveforms to be compatible with the transmission channels.
- Frequency spreading (e.g. spread spectrum) can produce a signal that is less vulnerable to interference (intentional or unintentional) and can be used to enhance the privacy of the communicators.
- Transmitter consists of a frequency up-conversion stage, a high-power amplifier, and an antenna.
10.Receiver portion consists of an antenna, a low-noise amplifier (LNA), and a down-conversion stage, typically to an intermediate frequency (IF).
note that,
A signal from the source —> the modulator is referred to a baseband signal or a bit stream. after modulation, it is called a digital waveform till the frequency up-conversion, vice versa.
2. Transceiver system (the analog part)
Figure 2: Block diagram of multimode and multiband transceiver [1]
For transmitting procedure, IQ signals from baseband are frequency up converted and added with 90-degree phase shift on Q signal. then the signals go thru bandpass filter and power amplifier, arrive at antenna port for transmission.
