An art exhibition

 Van Gogh Museum

Demonstration [n.集会示威; 游行示威;演示;演讲;证明]

An art exhibition I wanna talk about is one I visited in Amsterdam [荷兰首都阿姆斯特丹] back in December last year with my boyfriend which is the famous Van Gogh Museum.

The Van Gogh Museum is a place you can’t miss if you visit Amsterdam, because Van Gogh himsellf was a Dutch [dʌtʃ] adj.荷兰的 painter. It just makes a lot of sense to visit his museum in his hometown. The Van Gogh Museum is a pretty nice architecture that’s half bricks [brɪks] n.v.砖,砌砖,积木 and half glass [玻璃杯] , so it has pretty good lighting and it’s situated pretty much in the centre of the city, so it’s easy to get to. After going inside, we immediately started our art appreciation n.欣赏,体谅,同情 tour 旅游 . His paintings are classified into different sections according to time. They are put in a chronological [ˌkrɒnəˈlɒdʒɪkl] adj.按时间顺序 order. Before I went there I had already known his most famous paintings such as the sunflower, Almond [ˈɑːmənd] n.扁桃仁,杏仁 Blossoms [ˈblɒsəm] n.v花朵,开花 and his self-portrait. Indeed, a lot of people would cluster around these paintings to admire [ədˈmaɪə®] v. them. What surprised me most was how prolific [prəˈlɪfɪk] adj.多产的,创作丰富的,富饶的 he was, in addition to [除了] these most renowned [rɪˈnaʊnd] adj.有名的,受尊敬的 paintings, he had alot of other paintings, which are not so well known but still very impressive. One painting that drew my attention was called The Potato Eater, which is one of his earlier works. Unlike his other paintings in which he used bold [bəʊld] adj.大胆自信的,敢冒险的 n.黑体,粗体 and aggressive [əˈɡresɪv] adj.好斗的,侵略性的 colours, The Potato Eater is quite humble [ˈhʌmbl] adj.谦逊的; 虚心的 v.贬低; 使感到卑微 because I think he only used predominantly [prɪˈdɒmɪnəntli] adv.主要的,多数情况下 black, grey and brown adj.n.v 棕色的; 褐色的 ,set against a yellowish tone. The painting depicts [dɪˈpɪkts] v.描绘,绘画 a family of peasants [ˈpeznt] n.(尤指昔日或贫穷国家的) 农民,小农 who are having dinner in a dark and him environment. The only food they have on the table is a basket of, I guess, boiled v.(使) 沸腾; 煮沸; 烧开 potatoes. And they’re having it together with some black coffee. Their clothes are really crumpled [ˈkrʌmpld] v.压皱,起皱 and worn out probably because they’re so poor.

I really like Van Gogh used details to reflect the family’s wellbeing and also his admiration towards peasants even though they’re poor, even though they’re not well-off,yet they use their own hard work to provide for themselves which I think is an admirable thing.
