Thank you for contacting JetBrains support.

If by "shadow" you mean brown coloring, that means that directory is marked as "excluded" in project structure. The code will run, but code inspection and insight won't work for excluded folders, so please remove "excluded" flag from Project Structure settings.

Regarding the issue with opening a project - what is your Mac OS version? is it 10.15 beta? (https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/JBR-1639)
Please reproduce the issue and provide your log files

Also, does it happen with any folder you try to open, or only with some?
