PC-over-IP (PCoIP) is a proprietary protocol for remote workstation and desktop solution, designed and developed by Teradici. PCoIP enables remote access to workstations and servers, normally hosted in a machine room or data center, from a thin client (advertised as a 'zero client '), which can be just an LCD monitor with a PCoIP client processor integrated. The PCoIP protocol transmits only the changing pixels across a standard IP network to stateless PCoIP technology enabled devices. PCoIP both compresses and encrypts data over the wire.[ 1]
PCoIP technology is delivered in both hardware and software implementations. The PCoIP protocol has been adopted by VMware View in version 4.[ 2] [ 3] [ 4] Due to its adoption by VMWare, Teradici's protocol has been dubbed "VMWare's attack dog" in the desktop virtualization protocol wars.[ 5] Hardware clients that support the protocol include Dell 's FX100 [ 6] and Samsung 's PCoIP-enabled LCD monitors, 930ND, NC190 and NC240.[ 7] [ 8] Dell paired the FX100 with a backend rack workstation, the Precision R5400.[ 6] IBM , in partnership with Devon IT , also introduced a thin client, the TC10, as well as a backend rack workstation, the HC10 , reported only as using a proprietary protocol at their 2007 launch,[ 9] [ 10] but later acknowledged to use PCoIP; the thin client has been upgraded to the CP20.[ 11] Other vendors that offer PCoIP-based products are ClearCube and Verari .[ 12]
PCoIP technology allows enterprise PCs and workstations to be centrally managed in a data center while providing Full High Definition (HD) or higher resolution, full frame rate 3D graphics and HD media, with full USB peripheral interoperability, locally over a LAN or remotely over a WAN.[ 1]
