- Western 1.48% (against 1.63%)
- Samsung 1.65% (against 1.23%)
- Seagate 1.70% (against 1.89%)
- Hitachi 3.77% (against 3.95%)
With an improved score, Western has taken over from Samsung at the top. Samsung’s returns rate has also got worse. Seagate is hot on the heels of Samsung and Hitachi, as was the case in our last report, brings up the rear with quite a high rate. It is to be hoped that Toshiba, which has taken over Hitachi’s 3.5" hard drive production, will be able to remedy this problem.
4 hard drives have a higher than 5% rate:
Published on November 16, 2012
- 7.65% for the Hitachi Deskstar 7K3000 3 TB
- 6.91% for the Seagate Barracuda XT 2 To
- 5.78% for the Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 160 GB
- 5.30% for the Samsung SpinPoint F3 (HD253GJ) 250 GB
Here now are the stats for the 3 TB drives sold over the period:
- 7.65% for the Hitachi Deskstar 7K3000 3 TB
- 4.86% for the Seagate Barracuda XT 3 TB
- 3.36% for the Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 3 TB
- 3.12% for the WD Caviar Green 3 TB
And the 2 TB drives:
- 4.60% for the WD Caviar RE4 2 TB
- 3.91% for the WD Caviar Black 2 TB
- 3.32% for the WD Caviar Green 2 TB WD20EARS
- 2.28% for the Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 2 TB
- 1.94% for the WD AV-GP 2 TB
- 1.46% for the WD Caviar Green 2 TB WD20EARX
- 1.03% for the WD RE4-GP 2 TB

- Samsung 1.23% (as against 1.5%)
- Western 1.63% (as against 2.0%)
- Seagate 1.89% (as against 1.8%)
- Hitachi 3.95% (as against 3.0%)
Samsung keeps the top spot it gained last period, once again improving its returns rate while Hitachi’s score has worsened. Western has improved its rate significantly, moving ahead of Seagate. Now that Hitachi Storage belongs to Western Digital, it's to be hoped that WD will resolve these issues.
Six drives have a rate of over 5%:
- 9.70% Seagate Barracuda XT 3 TB
- 8.94% Hitachi Deskstar 7K3000 1.5 TB
- 7.53% Seagate Barracuda XT 2 TB
- 7.30% Hitachi Deskstar 7K2000 2 TB
- 5.78% Western Digital RE4-GP 2 TB
- 5.33% Western Digital Caviar Green 3 TB
If we look at the individual models we can see that Hitachi isn’t alone in having high rates. The Barracuda XTs do particularly badly. What about the 2 TB drives overall?
- 7.53% Seagate Barracuda XT 2 TB SATA 6Gb/s
- 5.78% Western Digital RE4-GP 2 TB
- 4.53% Hitachi Deskstar 7K3000 2 TB
- 3.18% Western Digital Caviar Black 2 TB
- 3.07% Western Digital AV-GP 2 TB
- 2.55% Seagate Barracuda LP 2 TB
- 2.31% Western Digital Caviar Green 2 TB WD20EARX
- 2.15% Western Digital Caviar Green 2 TB WD20EARS
- 1.80% Samsung SpinPoint F4 EcoGreen 2 TB

- Samsung 1.5% (as against 1.8%)
- Seagate 1.8% (as against 2.0%) (1.6% not including the 7200.11 160 GB)
- Western 2.0% (as against 1.5%)
- Hitachi 3.0% (as against 3.1%)
Surprisingly, Western Digital has been unthroned by Samsung and Seagate. Western's rates are up significantly and the competition has improved. Hitachi still brings up the rear by quite some distance, though its rate has improved slightly. Only three drives have a 5% or worse rate. These are listed below and the third is the 7200.11 160 GB which is at 16.4%: this is probably old stock with the problematic firmware of this series.
Here’s the breakdown model by model for 1 TB drives:
- 3.65% Western Digital Caviar Blue (WD10EALS)
- 3.59% Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.C (HDS721010CLA332)
- 2.89% Western Digital Caviar Black (WD1001FALS)
- 2.79% Western Digital Caviar Black (WD1002FAEX)
- 1.61% Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 (ST31000528AS)
- 1.57% Western Digital Caviar Green (WD10EARS)
- 1.31% Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 (ST31000524AS)
- 1.27% Western Digital Caviar Blue (WD10EALX)
- 1.15% Samsung SpinPoint F3 (HD103SJ)
And the breakdown for 2 TB drives:
- 5.53% Western Digital RE4-GP (WD2002FYPS)
- 5.07% Hitachi Deskstar 7K2000 (HDS722020ALA330)
- 4.75% Hitachi Deskstar 7K3000 (HDS723020BLA642)
- 4.42% Western Digital Caviar Black (WD2002FAEX)
- 3.48% Seagate Barracuda LP (ST32000542AS)
- 3.40% Seagate Barracuda XT (ST32000641AS)
- 3.05% Western Digital Caviar Green (WD20EARS)
- 2.98% Seagate Barracuda Green (ST2000DL003)
- 2.20% Samsung SpinPoint F4 EcoGreen (HD204UI)
Overall, the 2 TB drives are less reliable than the 1 TB drives. Samsung’s models have the lowest returns rates in both ranges. Note that with the Western Digital RE4-GP (WD2002FYPS), there was quite a low sample (253) and half the returns (7) were made on a single sale: this abnormal rate for what is a “pro” drive can therefore be explained by a problem with transport.

These rates were only for returns to the retailer, which isn’t always the case as you can also return a product directly to the manufacturer, though this does represent a minority in the first year.
- Western 1.5% (against 1.4%)
- Samsung 1.8% (against 2.5%)
- Seagate 2.0% (against 2.1%)
- Hitachi 3.1% (against 3.4%)
Western is top of the class, as was the case in our previous classification, excepting Maxtor which is now not listed. Samsung has improved its returns rate a great deal, which moves it up from second last to second. Hitachi is still bringing up the rear but with improved stats.
More precisely, here are the rates for 1 TB hard drives:
-1.2%: WD Caviar Green (WD10EARS)
- 1.3%: WD Caviar Blue (WD10EARS)
- 1.3%: WD Caviar Black (WD1001FALS)
- 1.4%: Samsung SpinPoint F3
- 1.5%: WD Caviar Black (WD1002FAEX)
- 2.2%: Seagate Barracuda 7200.12
- 2.9%: WD Caviar RE3 (WD1002FBYS)
- 4.1%: Seagate Barracuda LP
- 4.4%: Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.C
- 4.8%: WD Caviar Green (WD10EADS)
- 5.2%: Samsung SpinPoint F1
Hitachi is not bottom of the pile here, with the WD10EADS from Western and the SpinPoint F1, which was being phased out in the period the stats were taken, doing worst. The other Western and Samsung models do much better however. Here are the scores for 2 TB drives:
- 1.4%: Samsung EcoGreen F3
- 1.6%: WD Caviar RE4-GP (WD2002FYPS)
- 2.6%: WD Caviar Green (WD20EARS)
- 3.0%: WD Caviar Black (WD2001FALS)
- 3.7%: Seagate Barracuda LP
- 3.7%: WD Caviar Green (WD20EADS)
- 5.7%: Hitachi Deskstar 7K2000
In comparison to the previous period, note there has been a clear improvement for the rates for 2 TB drives. This is down to the fact that manufacturers now master the manufacturing process better and it is to be hoped that we won’t be getting any nasty surprises with the next set of stats that will include higher density models!

- Maxtor 1.04% (against 1.73%)
- Western Digital 1.45% (against 0.99%)
- Seagate 2.13% (against 2.58%)
- Samsung 2.47% (against 1.93%)
- Hitachi 3.39% (against 0.92%)
It’s curtains for Hitachi, who were in no.1 position last time round! Western Digital is still in second place in spite of an upward trend, while Maxtor takes over no. 1 spot.
Now here are the rates for 1 TB drives:
- 5.76%: Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.B
- 5.20%: Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.C
- 3.68%: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11
- 3.37% : Samsung SpinPoint F1
- 2.51%: Seagate Barracuda 7200.12
- 2.37%: WD Caviar Green WD10EARS
- 2.10%: Seagate Barracuda LP
- 1.57%: Samsung SpinPoint F3
- 1.55%: WD Caviar Green WD10EADS
- 1.35%: WD Caviar Black WD1001FALS
- 1.24%: Maxtor DiamondMax 23
Hitachi is the worst positioned, with two separate ranges! What about the 2 TB versions?
- 9.71%: WD Caviar Black WD2001FASS
- 6.87%: Hitachi Deskstar 7K2000
- 4.83%: WD Caviar Green WD20EARS
- 4.35%: Seagate Barracuda LP
- 4.17%: Samsung EcoGreen F3
- 2.90%: WD Caviar Green WD20EADS
Overall, the rates we’ve recorded here are poor. They don’t really inspire confidence in putting 2 TB of data in the hands of a single drive: a mirroring to back up your data certainly won’t go amiss. Of course 7200 rpm drives are less reliable than the 5400/5900 rpm ones, with almost 10% for the Western!
For the first time, we are including SSDs in our returns rates. Here are the figures by manufacturer:
- Intel 0.59%
- Corsair 2.17%
- Crucial 2.25%
- Kingston 2.39%
- OCZ 2.93%
Intel stands out here with a very good rate indeed. Among the few models for which over a 100 models were sold, none has a returns rate of over 5%.

- Hitachi 0.92% (against 0.92%)
- Western Digital 0.99% (against 0.89%)
- Maxtor 1.73% (against 2.79%)
- Samsung 1.93% (against 2.25%)
- Seagate 2.58% (against 2.89%)
Western has lost first place, while the returns rate for the others has fallen. Lets see where we are for drives with a higher than 5% returns rate:
- Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500 GB: 39%
- Maxtor DiamondMax 22 500 GB: 10.4%
- Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500 GB (8 MB): 10%
- Maxtor DiamondMax 22 1 TB: 8.9%
- Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 750 GB: 6.5%
The 7200.11 and DiamondMax 22 continue to undermine the Seagate and Maxtor results because of the firmware bug over this period. Here are the rates for 1 TB drives:
- Maxtor DiamonMax 22: 8.9%
- Seagate Barracuda LP: 2.3%
- Samsung SpinPoint F1: 2.2%
- Seagate Barracuda 7200.11: 2%
- Maxtor DiamondMax 23: 1.9%
- Seagate Barracuda 7200.12: 1.8%
- Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.B: 1.2%
- Western Digital Caviar Green WD10EADS: 0.7%
- Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS: 0.7%
Western Digital confirms its excellent reliability on high-end models and is at the head of the pack with its Green and Black models. Next come Seagate/Maxtor with the 7200.12/DM23 ranges which are identical, then the 7200.12, the Samsung SpinPoint F1, the Barracuda LP and the DiamondMax 22 with a very high rate linked to a firmware problem. The results for the Barracuda LP are quite disappointing as its 5900 rpm rotation speed should play in its favour.

- Western 0.89%
- Hitachi 0.92%
- Samsung 2.25%
- Maxtor 2.79%
- Seagate 2.89%
Western and Hitachi both do very well, but the situation has got a lot worse for Seagate and Maxtor (Maxtor, remember, is owned by Seagate). If you look at products with rates of 3% or more, the reason becomes obvious:
- Samsung SpinPoint T 500 GB: 12.9%
- Maxtor DiamondMax 22 1 TB: 6.5%
- Seagate 7200.11 500 GB: 5.2%
- Maxtor DiamondMax 22 500 GB: 4.8%
- Maxtor DiamondMax 22 750 GB: 3.9%
- Seagate 7200.11 1 TB: 3.7%
- Seagate 7200.11 750 GB: 3.6%
- Seagate 320 500 GB IDE: 3.2%
The 7200.11s and DiamondMax 22s have a big negative impact on the Seagate and Maxtor rates, because of a bug in a firmware update at the beginning of the year in this series. Note moreover Samsung’s very very poor score for its SpinPoint T 500 GB. Here are the rates for 1 TB drives:
- Maxtor DiamonMax 22: 6.5%
- Seagate 7200.11: 3.7%
- Samsung SpinPoint F1: 2.9%
- Samsung EcoGreen F1: 1.6%
- WD Caviar Green WD10EACS: 0.9%
- Hitachi 7K1000.B: 0.8%
- WD Caviar Black: 0%
- WD Caviar Green WD10EACS: 0%
The DiamondMax 22 is followed by the 7200.11 and then the SpinPoint F1. The most reliable drives are from Hitachi and Western Digital, with two models at 0% returns over the period!
