Microsoft Flight Simulator, perhaps the simulator of simulators, is finally here. The eagerly anticipated Xbox Game Studios title beckons you to touch the sky in dozens of airborne vehicles, from lightweight planes to huge, wide-body commercial jets. As someone reared on Airplane!, Macross, and Top Gun, and whose pop was a US paratrooper, I couldn’t wait to play.

In a way, Flight Simulator is not unlike Forza Horizon, another Xbox Game Studios series. From the main menu screen, you can dip into the Hangar to learn about the airplanes you’ve flown. The game feeds you the expected tech specs, such as cruise speeds and maximum altitudes, but also details about the planes’ histories. There’s just enough information to give you context, without being overwhelming.

One of Flight Simulator’s coolest features is its ability to recreate the world outside your window—er, above your home. By tapping Bing Maps’ high-definition satellite imagery, Microsoft Flight Simulator produces incredible terrain that includes more than a billion houses and 2 trillion trees. If that’s not enough, you can activate the real-time weather and traffic modes as you zip over your landmass of choice for an even more realistic airplane-piloting experience.

All that’s to say that flights can become incredibly intimate affairs. I live in New York City, so I decided that my first non-training-mode flight should come out of John F. Kennedy International Airport. After taking off and banking left, I flew over a familiar site: Floyd Bennett Field, a former commercial airstrip turned multi-use field. Unfortunately, I flew at night and under cloudy conditions, so I couldn’t see much below. That proved mildly annoying until I realized that I was experiencing the actual real-world weather conditions. Then, that lack of visibility became awesome.

One would think that a game entitled Microsoft Flight Simulator would push virtual pilots toward purchasing a flight stick, but that is not the case. Though the game is compatible with flight sticks, the game is also designed with gamepads and mouse-and-keyboard setups in mind. In fact, it auto-detects the controllers connected to your PC, and asks you to select a preferred control setup. Developer Asobo Studio and publisher Xbox Game Studios want you to be as comfortable as possible behind the yoke.

Confession time. Despite being a die-hard PC gamer in recent years, most of my gaming life has been lived as a console pleb. So my first instinct was to grab the ol’ Xbox gamepad. Thankfully, Microsoft Flight Simulator lets you scale the control level from fully manual controls to fully assisted controls, with highlighted instrument guidance.

Flight Simulator is a gorgeous game when running on high-end hardware, but Microsoft made certain that many PC gamers could experience the thrills of manned flight. All you need to initiate takeoff is a PC that has at least an AMD Ryzen 3 1200 or Intel Core i5–4460 CPU, AMD Radeon RX 570 or Nvidia GeForce GTX 770 GPU, 8GB of RAM, 150GB of storage, and the Windows 10 operating system. Even better, you can tweak more than 30 graphics-related settings, with the customization options ranging from airplane density to water physics. If you’re experiencing long load times or poor frame rates, adjusting those or the dozens of other game options should do the trick (though, flying over NYC or other densely populated areas makes the game struggle). Flight Simulator has a lot going on under the hood—it pulls real-time weather and air traffic, after all—that should activated or deactivated as needed.

Expensive flight lessons may prevent many people from plopping down onto a real pilot’s chair, but Microsoft Flight Simulator’s extremely thorough cockpit, plane, and environment recreations may be the next best thing to soaring through the clouds in a Boeing 747–8 Intercontinental or Zlin Savage Cub.
