Believe it or not, equipping the hook shot for the seventh time this hour does not make it the solution to the problem of getting the key which will open the chest in the next room over. What am I missing? And now I only have a little time left before I have to go to bed to get up early for work tomorrow. You know what? I’ve had it! I give up! I’m going to do what some gamers think is the unthinkable! I’m going to find the solution to my dungeon despair with an online strategy guide! You heard me right!

We’ve all gotten stuck on a certain puzzle in an adventure, or have needed some tips on beating that nightmarish boss that stands in the way of the next area. But my question is whether the answer of whether or not to submit to these persuasions to look for the remedy online or in a physical strategy guide says something about the gaming ethics of the player making this decision. Does finding out what to do next mean you just aren’t good at the game? Or perhaps you don’t enjoy the incredibly rewarding process of tinkering with the sandbox around you until you have found the epiphany? Is it even that serious? It depends on who you ask.

When I was little, my dad always bought our family the Prima strategy guides for all of my classic favorites. The high quality, color-filled pages of the booklets had detailed maps and descriptions of where to go and what to do. It made you feel like the guide was part of the gaming experience, not just a cheat sheet to find out the next answer. Almost like a teacher who gives their students the tools to figure out the solution on their exam without just relinquishing information and ridding their hands of the dilemma. Even still, reading one of these guides was not supposed to be a one time event; the publishers expected the gamer to follow along with the strategies listed for the entire duration of the play though. Trying to find just one tidbit of help was often a trek that just added more tedium to the gaming journey, at least that’s how underage me felt many times throughout childhood. All in all, you would be hard pressed to find a gamer born before the 2010s who hasn’t looked into the beautiful abyss of one of these magazines. They made you feel like you weren’t cheating yourself and you were still getting everything rewarding out of your game. But I liked the more “unethical” methods of help from the time I could use the internet. Enter gamefaqs.com

GameFAQS entered the internet superhighway in 1995 and quickly turned into the ultimate online library for walkthroughs and cheats of all kinds. This site made you feel like the kid who got the answer key in the classroom before test day. There were a variety of guides for almost every game on every platform, turning the process of finding the answer to a question into a very quick trip to the computer. If I can’t find the solution on one user’s guide, just go to the next one, and then to the next one after that. The site sometimes felt quite cold compared to the lively efforts of a Prima, creating a mixed sensation in the gamer. I feel both naughty and rewarded when I go to GameFAQS. But why should any of these emotions be conjured when both avenues lead to the same end point? I’m stuck in my video game and I’m tired of it. I want answers. I get them with either guide. End of story. It therefore demonstrates how vague the gamer ethics spectrum can be that these two roads muster different feelings, and also how you’ll probably get a different answer depending on the person you pose these matters to.

My brother is as anti-strategy guide and internet help as you can get. He could run around attempting to figure out the same objective in a game for two days without knowing what to do and still be unconvinced that it’s time to take a peek into the answer sheet. My dad is the opposite. Difficult bosses, hidden items, and more are all up for viewership grabs on Youtube and he has no shame in taking advantage of these modern walkthroughs. What motivates them to make these decisions on help or no help, though? Probably what makes every gamer play to begin with: enjoyment. Whatever aids in making the gaming experience as fun as possible is what should guide someone to go looking in a strategy manual or walkthrough, or to make the choice to soldier through for hours on end until the solution finally appears without that help. My brother tells me that there is no point in gaming if you are just going to go looking for someone or something else to solve the puzzle or quest for you in times of difficulty, but that is just the manifestation of his personal enjoyment of gaming. There is no moral code to playing a video game, and nobody is hurt by “cheating” and finding the answer online. It is just simply a matter doing whatever makes you happy.

At the same time, there are certainly other instances of video game help tools becoming too soft on the person playing. Guides, cheats, and walkthroughs are one in the same essentially, and the player still has to execute whatever directions they have just been given, but Nintendo has added a feature to their Switch Online library that is nearly impossible to use without abusing it: an infinite rewind feature. By simply pressing the shoulder buttons simultaneously, the player can rewind to any part of their current play through, going back several minutes on any of the classic titles. It really does put the “strategy guides are cheating” argument to shame because, unlike with using a guide, you don’t even have to execute anything precisely when using the rewind feature. It’s playing a game where death is a moot point. It is obviously Nintendo’s way of letting younger players who are inexperienced in the ways of playing difficult retro games to get engaged in the experience without getting too discouraged. At the same time, it is all too tempting for a veteran like me to just rewind to my convenience, not wanting to make the trek back to a boss room in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Much like a guide, it is an optional choice that every gamer has the ability to use or ignore, but the rewind feature speaks to our innate human instincts to take short cuts and be lazy much more than any walkthrough ever could. It’s so much more tempting to abuse because it’s at our fingertips. Guides take effort to use, rewind features don’t.

In the end though, I shouldn’t judge a rewind tool. Their purpose is just the same as a strategy guide’s. They are both there to help (or hinder) the enjoyment of a gamer’s play time, depending on the opinion of the gamer in question.
