Immaculate human innovations have made us reach the pinnacle of our power. Our Failure to understand our dominance over all other life forms to be a responsibility has resulted in crony capitalism. Often, we tend to forget where we come from and where we go after death. We, humans, are a part of that endless cycle of energy and matter in nature. However, our denial of this scientific fact has caused us to run a system of exploitation. Our callousness towards the living system called earth has caused the depletion of our valuable natural resources. This has forced us to look back on our ways as we suffer from an apocalyptic water crisis looming high over us.

The solution lies in using the same technology which has heightened our chances of survival for reclaiming and restoring of water resources. Water treatment is an innovative idea that would help us in the conservation of water resources. The concept of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle water.

This would give time for our depleted Freshwater resources of groundwater and surface-water to replenish naturally. The demand for freshwater can be decreased by using treated water for domestic, agricultural, and industrial purposes.

Freshwater use could be restricted exclusively for drinking and other potable purposes. Thus, our growing need for water could be met sustainably. Making water conservation a part of our life by rooftop rainwater harvesting along with increased usage of treated water is the way forward. The sustenance of life on Earth depends upon it.

Wastewater from municipal, agricultural, and industrial sources should be treated before their release into the environment. This will help save the environment by curbing water and soil pollution. There are biological, chemical, and physical systems that are in use today for treatment.

Conventional wastewater treatment technologies are effective in removing:

1) Physical impurities via Flocculation and Coagulation

2) and Microbial load via Chlorination

But the matter of chemical impurities looms large owing to the rising tide of chemicals in use today [1].

It has been found that conventional wastewater treatment plants are ineffective when dealing with chemical impurities. As a result, reusing wastewater with chemical impurities becomes difficult. The rising tide of physical, chemical, and biological impurities are a problem.

When it comes to drinking water high water quality is necessary. Membrane-based water treatment technologies are efficient in treating seawater, groundwater, and surface water. It is used in the Middle East for seawater purification and various other countries. Its high cost is a hindrance when it comes to wide-scale use in developing and underdeveloped countries [2].

What we need is a multi-utility technology capable of removing various types of chemicals which could also help in disinfection. A technology that can decrease the cost of membrane-based technologies. A technology that can be used in household, institutional or community level decentralized wastewater treatment systems.

The movement of electrons causes electricity. They are also capable of massive destruction at the atomic scale. They can disintegrate the structures of complex organic compounds which would ultimately become carbon dioxide and water.

Electrons can also precipitate out heavy metals from the matrix of wastewater by reducing them. Destruction of Organic compounds and removing precipitated heavy metals through filtration can decrease the cost of membrane-based technologies by increasing the life of the membranes [3].

In Electrochemical treatment, electrodes immersed in an electrolyte can induce the movement of electrons between them. The positive electrode is known as the anode. The negative electrode is called the cathode. At the anode, organic compounds get degraded through oxidation [4]. At the cathode, heavy metals get precipitated through reduction. Another process that is involved in the removal of heavy metals is electrochemical adsorption [5,6]. Electrochemical treatment can disinfect wastewater and it is widely used in the disinfection of swimming pools [3].

Electrochemical methods seem to be an attractive option owing to high process, and time efficiency. The greatest advantage that this technique has over others is that it can be automated. Its potential as a multi-purpose treatment technology that is not vulnerable to environmental fluctuations has caught the interest of the scientific community. For these reasons, it is regarded to be a suitable technology application for decentralized wastewater treatment systems [3].

It’s not technology that destroys our natural resources. It’s our attitude towards technology’s usage that destroys our environment. A change in attitude will change our approach towards our environment. Water and wastewater treatment can help us attain the 6th goal of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDG).

Clean water and sanitation are important for us and our future generations. Technology with the right kind of attitude and approach can help us achieve it. Reducing stress on our natural resources through sustainable technology and practices is the need of the hour. A necessary aspect to bring back the lost balance between us and our environment.
