pride is family animated sticker by weareinhouse.com

2020 has been a solemn, transformative year. Pride month takes place in the context of a groundswell up-rising against racism and police brutality and in the continued isolation of COVID-19.

When Pride celebrations got cancelled or moved online due to the pandemic, In-House Int’l designer Carlos Castro, whose story you can read below, realize how infrequently LGBTQ+ families in all their diverse configurations are centered and represented.

The Pride Family portraits are the result of that reflection, a way to celebrate the LGBTQ+ families cultivating belonging, safety, care and love every day of the year.

Because In-House is a creative studio, we reached out to creative LGBTQ+ individuals whose work we follow. They work in different areas of creativity: visual art, poetry, zines, the ballroom scene, typography, journalism, branding and graphic design.

The configurations of their families vary–some have children, others a beloved pet, others are friends, some live apart. It’s worth noting that LGBTQ+ families can take many shapes that are not often represented, and that this series only scratches the surface. In the interviews published below, families shared their thoughts in about Pride and what family means to them.

Pride Family Portrait of Blanca Haddad and Anna Mears. Illustration by weareinhouse.com

(Anna Mears) (Blanca Haddad and Anna Mears)

Blanca Haddad is an artist, a poet and cultural agitator. She lives in Barcelona with her partner, teacher Anna Mears, and their two dogs. Blanca has been in her hometown of Caracas, Venezuela since March. In her recent New York Times Op-Ed, she wrote “The closer I feel to death, the more certainty I have that I need to be by the side of love.”

The impulse she describes there, to love rather than fear, to frame love as a kind of vital force that’s food for courage, is reflected in how the couple describes family. “We think family is a definitely a community which is based on respect, love, trust, mutual caring and understanding. It’s a basis from which you can explore life with the support and companionship of your partner who helps you grow and develop,” they wrote.

Oride family animated sticker quote by Blanca Haddad, illustrated by weareinhouse.com

If love supplies their courage to explore life, family and belonging create the structure for each of them to grow and be free. “I think our family is a small ecosystem which is like a nest of protection and support with freedom and independence as an important value.”

Pride Family Portrait of House of Escada’s Jazzul, London, Shyanne, Twilight and Yyoyo. Illustration by weareinhouse.com

Your names: Jazzul Escada, London Escada, Shyanne Escada, Twilight Escada, Yyoyo Escada

Jazzul Escada,London Escada,Shyanne Escada,Twilight Escada,Yyoyo Escada

Many people first ‘met’ members of the family that is the Iconic House of Escada watching the first season of HBOMax’s show Legendary. But the insitition of the House itself has has over 25 years of history. Current family members Jazzul, London, Shyanne, Twilight and Yyoyo are part of the Ballroom House scene, which means that there’s a formal structure of the house that follows the conventions of the scene.

Of the families we had the privilege to hear from, theirs was the only one that provided multiple, named, individual answers to the questions through which we got to see their unique viewpoints and convergences.

pride family animated sticker quote “Soulful Connections” by House of Escada, graphics by weareinhouse.com

Theirs is a chosen family, as are many of the other participating families. But this distinction comes to the front immediately in their definitions of family: “Family is that love and support system and family is not always blood,” says London. Shyanne adds that it’s bonds that make the family. Yyoyo’s definition is poetic: “Soulful connections that give you space to be yourself. A family provides structure, security, love and support.” Love, support, a selfless affection here are not bound by automatic obligation. Rather, as Jazzul puts it, it comes down to “the people that commit to love and support you unconditionally. A family helps you thrive.”

Their admiration for each other stood out: “They’re creative and passionate. And full of love!” said Yyoyo of their family. “Beautiful Stylish Creative Lovers,” adds London. Jazzùl and Shyanne cite the Power Rangers and the Spice Girls to describe how theirs is a family of unique individuals who, when they come together “it’s like we’ve never been apart.”

On the subject of Pride, there was a focus on the importance of each person’s ability to be fully themselves and creating the space for others to do the same: “[What pride means to us is] to live as your most true authentic self at any given moment,” writes Shyanne.

Pride family animated sticker quote “Rise Up for Equality” by weareinhouse.com

“Pride is important because we all share traumas that keep us from being who we are. Pride is about saying ‘ya know, I accept me even if you don’t.’”says Yyoyo. “It shows that standing up for yourself can change the world one person at a time,” adds London.

They share stories and thoughts that underline their commitment to Pride and building a world where lives and people are equally valued and embraced fully.

  • Jazzul: “There is only one YOU. Embrace who you are and all of those parts of you that you try to avoid! Be happy.”

  • London: Don’t let time pass you by to live the way that makes you happy. I recently learned, that my biological family supports me no matter what as long as I am happy. I spent years away from my family thinking they wouldn’t accept my femme side. Now they are the ones to embrace it. LIVE NOW.

  • Yyoyo: “Learn to love yourself enough to elevate your life, body and soul out of what no longer serves you. Let go or be forced to let go.” Kind of morbid ha hehehe

Pride Family Portrait of Giuseppe Salerno and Paco Gonzalez of Resistenza Type. Illustration by weareinhouse.com

(Tor) (Giuseppe Salerno, Paco González and Tor)

Giuseppe Salerno, Paco González & Tor split their time between Valencia, Spain and Torino, Italy. Giuseppe and Paco, the human members of this family, are also the duo behind indie type foundry Resistenza Type.

Living and working together across their two home-cities, they share what seems like their secret-sauce: “We are Tor, a dynamic cinnamon boxer dog, Paco and Giuseppe. We are best friends, we built a lot of things together and also surpassed hard times getting to transform them in great memories.”

Pride family animated sticker quote “Love, Respect and Cake” from Resistenza type created by weareinhouse.com

They also have a special love for sweets — when asked how they’d define family in just five words, their answer is listed, part code, part recipe: “Love, Respect, Care, happiness & Cake”

“Family means feeling proud of each other and celebrating, sharing, growing together, and fighting for stupid things every 5 minutes, then Paco opens the fridge and eat gelato,” explains Giuseppe.

To this family, Pride isn’t a time-bound celebration, “Everyday is Pride day, pride is loving each other, pride is activism, joy and bravery.” Their everyday lens of Pride doesn’t mean that it’s un-special or lacks the active elements of activism.

“Live the Phantasy baby cause there is still a lot to fight for and we won’t give up.”

Pride Family Portrait of Claudia Zapata and Raquel Rodriguez. Illustration by weareinhouse.com

(Raquel Rodriguez) (Claudia E. Zapata and Raquel Rodriguez)

Claudia Zapata is a curator and creative powerhouse. She’s a founding member of Austin, TX based Puro Chingón collective. She’s currently a PhD candidate living in Washington, DC with Raquel Rodriguez.

Claudia’s family “ ..consists of my partner, Raquel Rodriguez, some relatives, and friends. Each of my family members are part of a circle that I have created for mutual support, love, and honesty.”

They define family as a choice, homing in on what it isn’t: “Blood does not define family.” Raquel and Claudia “look forward to expanding our created family in the future incorporating new, chosen family members.”

Pride family sticker quote “Blood Doesn’t Define Family” by Claudia Zapata, illustrated by weareinhouse.com

“My family is a selection of individuals that support me and love me for who I am. Family, and being part of a family, is an identity that I am still defining for myself,” writes Claudia, “Like any identity, especially for a queer person, we realize that the steadfast rules of society, language, and love were not created with us in mind; therefore, we have to dismantle these oppressive frameworks that we are constantly excluded from and create our own havens and communities to be treated like human beings.”

For Raquel and Claudia, the meaning of Pride is living, continued history that’s inscribed in the individual experiences of participants. “PRIDE is significant because it is a unique celebration for each participant each year. Every iteration will be someone’s first experience with the celebration whether at any age, a different form of celebration. Other holidays and celebrations have a rehearsed performative enactment of traditions since birth; these motions usually are grounded in heteronormativity or reinscribed as such through popular culture. However, PRIDE is a celebration stemming from the 1969 Stonewall riots and Black and Brown trans and butch women, such as Marsha P. Johnson, Stormé DeLarverie, and Sylvia Rivera, resisting the systemic, police brutality against queer people.”

“Blood does not family make. Those are relatives. Family are those with whom you share your good, bad, and ugly, and still love one another in the end. Those are the ones you select.”

Pride Family Portrait of Carlos Castro and his family of friends. Illustration by weareinhouse.com

(Carlos Castro Lugo and Family)

Carlos Castro is a graphic designer at In-House and the creative mastermind of this portrait series. The cancellation of Pride celebrations worldwide led him to think about what the public gathering aspect of Pride means to him. Belonging came to mind, being in a safe, loving, public community where he didn’t feel the need to filter himself.

COVID-19 measures in Barcelona, where Carlos lives, were stringent. As they slowly eased, Carlos reunited with many of the friends he considers family and realized there it was: belonging. It was smaller, more contained, but belonging nonetheless.“Family is where you are loved for being fully you,” writes Carlos.

Pride family sticker quote “Through Thick and Thin” by Carlos Castro, illustrated by weareinhouse.com

“A friends family is supportive, it’s giant tree branching out to the sky. It’s your tribe through thick and thin,” explains Carlos. His friends family is not, as he once described it, ‘small’: Brickel Guerra, Kevin Ortiz, Moisés Pérez, Gisette Rosas,Marcel Chacón, Diego Rojas and Martín Alfocea are integral parts of his intimate circle. His friends are sources of “safe spaces, respect, loyalty, and trust to feel valued, listened to, and respected. These values, together with honesty, make friends a source of support/platform to move forward in life and feel a little more complete each time,” writes Carlos, “Each one has something different that makes you grow, that contributes to you, that complements you. Friends are like sunshine.”

For Carlos, family are people with whom he feels good being himself: “I must say how grateful I am with the family I have, from those from blood and those as friends. Sometimes you don’t need your parents to say “I accept you”. You just need the facts, the little actions that they do to give you the best. So, I can say I am fortunate to have them.”

Pride and family are deeply connected. “Pride is what makes us live in freedom nowadays. Pride is a statement that we exist and we have the same rights. We owe that to Stonewall, the revolt in the New York neighborhood that started the LGBTIQ+ movement, and thanks to which rights and liberties have been achieved for the group worldwide. That is why Pride is very important because it was, is, and continues to be what you are and what you can become,” explains Carlos.

Pride Family Portrait of Jose Martinez and Miguel A Garcia. Illustration by weareinhouse.com

(Miguel A Garcia) (Jose Martinez and Miguel A Garcia)

José Martinez is a journalist living in Madrid, Spain with husband Miguel A. Garcia and their daughter, Liz.

When asked to describe their definition of family in five words or fewer, they shared a list that also centers on experiences, and includes pride as a core concept in their family. “Family is: Happiness, Adventure, Pride, and Love.”

Pride family animated sticker quote “Being Ourselves” created by weareinhouse.com

Family means everything to José and Miguel. They are parents to a toddler, but it isn’t parenthood that makes them a family, necessarily. As they reflected on what are the key factors makes their family a family, they shared their of commitment to love, care and support for self-determination as the core of what brings them together. “[Our family is] full of Love, caring and tolerance among three of us,” writes José. “Love and Freedom makes tolerance,” explained José.

The couple further stressed the value they place of freedom. “Freedom means everything to us, so we are free to choose and be what we wanted to be. That particular time makes us being stronger and close among three of us, as a core!”

The history leading to Pride underpins that freedom to be who they are. Pride itself is “a moment to share and to show we are people full of love and life, as everyone else. It is a moment to be proud of what we are and show more other LGTBI people that you can be happy and free.”
