In a team with different skillsets, one can be hopeful and idealistic about the outcome. The goal is to work as one team, put users first and create awesome experiences. Unfortunately, things don’t always go as planned.

Here’s some barriers to working in multi-disciplinary teams and how to address them:

(Barrier 1: Design is looped in last minute)

You may be part of a team that doesn’t see design or research as a part of the product or business process. The issues may be UX maturity of the group. Design may be seen as the icing on the cake or seen to have the primary role of “making things pretty”.

Tip: Focus on UX education, starting with key partners (or people you collaborate with the most). Building trust in the design process takes time.

(Barrier 2: Miscommunication between disciplines)

It is not always easy to clearly communicate the technology behind the application to non-technical team members, including content writers, legal experts and design. This can easily become a game of “telephone” where research insights get lost in the mix or the reality of technology complexities are largely ignored.

Tip: Find a knowledgeable point of contact, prepare questions and get in quality time listening to their explanations.

(Barrier 3: Uneven foundation problem)

Everyone starts from unique skillset, background, knowledge. While diverse perspectives are a strength for the team, it can also cause miscommunication and ultimately lead to bad collaboration.

Have frequent conversations to share what team members are learning and perspectives from their expertise. Make sure to level set before starting a new project without making the assumption that everyone is coming from the same perspective.

Time spent laying down this foundation is time saved later on!

Tip: Create an onboarding document. What are critical high level things everybody needs to know/agree on?

(Barrier 4: Curse of expertise)

Experts are valuable in their depth of domain knowledge. However, there are several challenges as you become more of an expert in a space.

You may be less inclined to innovate (curse of “we’ve always done things this way”), less empathetic with beginners and over time, develop less sensitivity to existing problems

Tip: Refocus by staying close to customers over time even if your natural inclination is to focus on other seemingly important things to do.

(Barrier 5: “We don’t need research”)

Perhaps your team may have a lack of time/budget/resource which leads them to omit user research. This can lead to wasted effort building things that nobody wants.

Remember, you are doing building products for people and doing customer support before the product is being built to make sure your future customers are satisfied. How do you make good products without a thorough understanding of your customer?

Tip: Frame research as a cost saving approach in time and resources (mostly everyone can agree that saving money is a good thing).

(Barrier 6: Poor decision making)

Making good decisions requires a balance of your intuition and customer data. Time is valuable.

Having a process that incorporates both of these areas is critical. What criteria are you using to make decisions? Do you need a consensus for every decision and when? What is the resulting impact of the decision? What are your organization’s goals?

If your team suffers from poor decision making processes, there may be unfortunate outcomes where decisions are:

  1. Based on assumptions

  2. On the whim of a senior leader(s)

  3. Slow or stagnant

Tip: Understand higher level goals for the immediate team and the organization. Keep these in mind when making decisions.
