Yesterday, I received my Apple Developer Transition Kit, a prototype ARM-based Macintosh, and so far I’m pleased with it. It’s enclosure seems to be a standard Mac Mini.

Setting up my software development environment took the better part of the evening. However, so far the experience has been more or less flawless. One big caveat is that it does not support x86 virtualization, so Android Device simulation in Android Studio will not currently work, even though there are ARM images. With the Xcode 12 Beta 6 update, Xcode iPhone simulation works flawlessly, however.

More good news: I haven’t run into a single piece of software that I run in my toolchain that hasn’t been compatible with ARM yet, except in Homebrew where every package I’ve tried to install through it so far has worked, except for PostgreSQL.
