Lesson 23 A new house

I had a letter from my sister yesterday. She lives in Nigeria. In her letter, she said that she would come to England next year. If she comes, she will get a surprise. We are now living in a beautiful new house in the country. Work on it had begun before my sister left. The house was completed five mouths ago. In my letter, I told her that she could stay with us. The house has many large rooms and there is a lovely garden. It is a very modern house, so it looks strange to some people. It must be the only modern house in the district.

1. complete: v. 完成（常在工程中使用）
   finish: finish doing
   complete the building.
   finish reading the book.
   complete doing my homework.
   complete: adj. 完全的，完整的

2. modern:adj. 新式的，和以往不同的
   modern history: 现代史
   modern house: 现代
   modern art: 现代艺术
   modernization: n. 现代化 （中国特色的词汇）
   three good student: 三好学生

3. strange: adj. 奇怪的（因为对一个东西不熟悉才奇怪）
   stranger: n. 陌生人
   be strange to sth.
   I'm strange to computers.

4. district: n. 地区（行政）
   area: n. 地段、区域
   region: n. 地区（战争）

5. get a surprise: 吃了一惊
   to one's surprise: 让某人吃惊的是
   shock: I get a shock.

6. a beautiful new house.
   和被修饰词的距离越近，那么关系越密切、越强调。
   a spare old cloth. 一件不要的旧衣服。

7. Work on it had begun before she left. 作为名词，意思是工程。常用词组work on

8. It'll rain.
   It's cloudy.
   There'll be a thunderstorm.

9. When will it be convenient for you to come? ［口语］邀请

10. They are of different ages.
