What Is a Temporary Root?

By Mandy Slake, eHow Contributor

Google allows wireless carriers and manufacturers to customize its Android mobile operating system, and in many cases this involves removing features such as wireless tethering. Rooting allows you to install apps that restore this functionality by giving you superuser permissions on the device. You have a choice of permanent or temporary root, depending on what you're trying to accomplish.

  1. Definition

    • By default, an Android phone blocks you from changing some of the essential system files. The process of removing the restrictions is called gaining root access, or rooting. Many third-party applications also require root access to install or run. Rooting is a required step in changing the phone to a different carrier or installing a modified version of the Android operating system, or ROM.

    Methods

    • The process of rooting an Android phone varies depending on the individual make and model. Some phones allow you to temporarily or permanently root by downloading and running an application on the phone. Others require connecting the phone to a computer using the USB data cable and running software on the PC. The process for a specific phone can change depending on which version of the Android operating system the device is currently running. Check the version by pressing the menu key and tapping "Settings." Touch "About phone" and look under the Android Version field.

    Advantages

    • Many Android phones don't allow you to delete files or applications that have been preinstalled by the carrier. When you open the applications list, the option to uninstall is absent or grayed out. These items take up space in the phone's memory and in some cases reduce the battery life by running in the background. The major advantage of temporarily rooting your Android phone is it allows you to remove the items without compromising your phone's manufacturer's warranty. You go through the temporary root process, remove the items, and then reboot and the phone is back to normal. It also allows you to install applications that require root access to install but don't require it to run.

    Disadvantages

    • Temporary root is just that, temporary. It doesn't allow you to run applications that require root access to function normally. It also doesn't allow you to make permanent changes to the phone's ROM. If you want to change to a version of the ROM that isn't provided by your cellular carrier, you need permanent root. Rooting can also be a tricky process, depending on the individual device. There's a possibility you can render the phone inoperable. This is called bricking your device. It's possible to restore a bricked phone using the manufacturer's recovery tools, but it requires resetting the phone to factory default. You'll lose all the data stored in the device's memory.
