OLTP and OLAP are basic terminology of SAP. Online transactional processing(R/3)and Online Analytical processing( BW)。

OLTP:

High availability, higher data volume.

detailed veiw of data.

current data.

Add,modify,delete(update) and read are the data base operations.

relational(flat tables,high normalization) sata structure.

data set: 6-18months.

OLAP:

simple to use,flexible access to data.

view of data: frequently aggregated.

historical view of data.

read only acess.

multidimentional structures.

data set: 2-7years.
