The following example demonstrates how to model a microstrip low-pass filter using ADS. The circuit is designed to filter out frequency above 10 GHz. The substrate of the microstrip circuit has dielectric constant Er = 9.9 and thickness H = 0.635mm. The circuit is simulated from 1GHz to 20GHz in 0.1 GHz step with 50Ω port impedance at the input and output, and the s-parameter result is illustrated.
In this example, the low-pass filter consists series of microstrip of various widths and lengths. Each section of microstrip behaves like a capacitor or an inductor depends on its width and length. By tailoring these sections, the circuit can be designed to have certain behavior.
