What is Mainframe?

A mainframe is a computing system that businesses use to host the commercial database,transaction servers, and application that require a greater degree of security and availability than is commonly found on smaller-scale machines.

RAS-- reliability, availabilty, serviceability

Two major uses: Batch Job and Online (real time) Transaction

What kinds of OS can running in the mainframe? 

Z/OS , Z/VM, VSE , Linux for zSeries, Z/TPF
