Summary for SOME/IP
What is SOME/IP?
The full name of SOME/IP is Scalable service-Oriented MiddlewarE over IP.
It works over the transport layer in the OSI model as a middleware for upper apps(such as OTA, ADAS etc.), which is compatable for various operating system.
It supports a range of middleware features1 :
- Serialization: transforming into and from on-wire representation.
- Remote Procedure Call (RPC): implementing remote invocation of functions.
- Service Discovery (SD): dynamically finding and functionality and configuring its access.
- Publish/Subscribe (Pub/Sub): dynamically configuring which data is needed and shall be sent to the client.
- Segmentation of UDP messages: allowing the transport of large SOME/IP messages over UDP without the need of fragmentation.
Why SOME/IP?
With the development of automotive apps, service-oriented communication is an apparent trend for automotive Ethernet architecture. In addition to the communication, apps also should be regulated to be service-oriented in order to fulfill the conformance for all apps within the architecture (even beyond the architecture if V2X situation is considered).
SOME/IP is specified to implement above requirements by AUTOSAR (an automotive standard organization). From now, SOME/IP is the only standard solution to implement service-oriented architecture.
