Q: What is Linda Gray?
2
W: Hi! I’m calling about the three-bedroom house you advertised in yesterday’s newspaper. It sounds really nice.
M: It is especially good if you have children.
Q: What do we learn from the conversation?
3
W: Did you see that program last night about volcanoes? It was fascinating!

W: Did my magazine come in today?
M: Sorry, I have bad news for you.
W: What’s that – no magazine today?
M: Worse. The magazine’s in, but I’m afraid that it’s going to be the last issue. Says so on the cover.
W: No more Sports for Women Illustrated? Can I see it?
M: Sure, here it is.
W: This is too bad. I really like this magazine. There isn’t much news about women in sports.
M: Maybe you should take up sports rather than just read about them. Mother’s Day is coming up. How would you like me to get you a basketball?
W: Well, that’d be different from what your sister is likely to get me. But I think basketball is more of a young person’s sport.
M: Maybe a tennis racket would be better.
W: Maybe. But I’d like to check out what my female friends are doing in terms of sports. I’m sure that many of them will also be disappointed about the magazine.

A freight train struck a truck at a rural Alabama crossing early Thursday, killing four men on their way to work and injuring several others, authorities said.

The truck was hit at about 6 a.m. at a crossing near US Highway 31. The tracks were marked by a sign but had no cross bars or flashing lights.

Four people were injured in the crash and there were “multiple deaths”, Chilton County Medical Examiner Randy Yeargan said. An officer at the scene said four people were dead.

One woman at the scene who said she was a relative of two men in the truck said they were headed to work at a construction site. She declined to give her name, and said she didn’t know if her relatives had survived.

The injured were taken by helicopter and ambulances to a Birmingham hospital.

The white truck was knocked beside the railroad tracks, with windows broken and seats and contents from inside strewn on the ground. The CSX Transportation train cars were loaded with automobiles.

CSX Corp. spokesman Gary Sease in Jacksonville, Florida, said the train, with two locomotives and 38 cars, was headed to Louisville, Kentucky, from Baldwin, Florida.

A 20-year-old Australian model and dancer won the Miss Universe title in a two-hour beauty contest watched by television viewers around the world.

Jennifer Hawkins, a 5-foot-11 blonde with blue eyes, was chosen from 80 beauty queens. Miss USA, Shandi Finnessey, was awarded second place.

Hawkins received the crown from outgoing Miss Universe, Amelia Vega, and then walked the length of the stage to the cheers of the crowd. Several times she reached up to touch her crown, as if to remind herself she had actually won the title.

Besides modeling and dancing, Hawkins also organizes a dance team that tours Australia. Her interests include surfing, camping and watching ballet.

Before the contest began, Cuban-American singer Gloria Estefan, who performed at the Miss Universe finals, defended beauty contests from critics who insist that such events treat women merely as playthings. She said, “A beautiful woman has very great powers to convince, and we have seen many misses who have done a great job.”

Despite Estevan’s support, many people question the value of beauty contests. Women’s liberation organizations in the United States regularly demonstrate in protest outside Miss America and Miss World contests. Conservative religious groups in India forced such contests to move from Calcutta when they threatened bombings.

All the same, some Australians were hoping the two-hour show would draw world attention to the beauty of their country and attract tourists. They hope Australia is going to shine for what it is, an unforgettable place.
