“the way+从句”结构的意义及用法，首先让我们来看下面这个句子：

在这个句子中，theway是先行词，后面是省略了关系副词that或in which的定语从句。

 

下面我们将叙述“the way+从句”结构的用法。

1.  the way之后，引导定语从句的关系词是that而不是how,因此，<<现代英语惯用法词典>>中所

给出的下面两个句子是错误的：

This isthe way how it happened.

This isthe way how he always treats me.

 

2. 在正式语体中，that可被in which所代替；在非正式语体中，that则往往省略。由此我们得到theway后接定语从句时的三种模式：

1) theway +that-从句

2) theway +in which-从句

3) theway +从句

例如：

Theway(in which ,that) these comrades look at problems is wrong.

这些同志看问题的方法不对。

 

Theway(that ,in which)you’re doing it is completely crazy.

你这么个干法，简直发疯。

 

Weadmired him for the way in which he faces difficulties.

Wallaceand Darwin greed on the way in which different forms of life had begun.

3.the way(that)

有时可以与how(作“如何”解)通用。例如：

 That’s the way (that) she spoke. = That’s howshe spoke.

4．the way的其它用法：

the way，下面我们将叙述它的一些用法。

1)用作as或accordingas,引导状语从句，常见于美国英语。

如：

I like itthe way it is.

Eventoday, political maps reflect the world the way we want it to look.

时至今日，政治地图不是按我们想要看到的那样来反映世界。

 

Kingsplayed maps the way we play board games.

君主们玩地图就象我们玩棋子一样。

 

I alwaysthought she was a common-sense person who discussed things the way they ought tobe discussed.

我一向认为好是个明达的人，讨论问题总是该怎样讨论就怎样讨论。

 

The way Ilook at it, it’s not what you do that matter so much.

依我看，重要的并不是你做什么。

 

No wonderthat girl despises me, the way you encourage her.

2)用作that，引导主语从句，常见于美国英语。

如：

It’s asin the way he keeps on doing it.

他不停这样做，实在是一种罪过。

(=It’s asin that keeps on doing it.)

 

It waspitiful the way he kept complaining to his wife.

他不停地向妻子诉苦，真够可怜的。

 

3)作how(作“多么”解)或how much，引导名词性从句。

如：

No oneexcept you, not even the children, can understand the way I miss Dave.

除了你以外，没有人会明白我多么思念大卫，甚至连孩子们也不会明白。

 

4)在下面的句子中，way意为“道路”，故后面的介词用了by：

 

There wasa high rock at the far end so that there was only one way into this place theway by which we

had come.

那一头有一块高大的岩石、所以只有一条路能走进这块地方，那就是我们进来的那条路。

 

5)下面句子中的way意为“方式、方法”，但前面是限定词any和no,所以后面的介词也没用in：

I cannever hear the lovely noise of the sea never again see the beautiful flowersand the sun! Tell me, grandmother, is there any way by which I can get a soul?
