Discussionn Questions

  • How do you learn language?Share with the class.
  • Is surrounding yourself with English and piking it up 'naturally' the best way to learn?

Today we are going to give you five tips to help you make the most of learning outside the classroom

Reading

People have different perceptions about learning a language. Some think learning English means understanding  and remembering words, phrase ,sounds and rules. They like clear explanations, word lists and challenging grammer exercises.

Others think learning a language is like learning a new skill, like swimming, playing tennis or driving.what matters is repetition and controlled practice--lots of it !Most of people think language learning is a natural process in the right conditions, but it does take hard work.

tip one

We tend to use movies, music and TV shows as a benchmark to measure how good we are in a second language. This could become very discouraging is you have been studying english for a long period of time. This ca put pressure on you because it will always make you feel inferior.one hundrend percent comprehension for an ESL studnet is probaly not a goal worth pursuing.especially when you are watching movies.

Questions

How much can you understand of a English movies?

How about a song or an English television show?

Do you sing or listen to english songs?

tip two

Always choose movies,TV shows, songs and books that you really like.Take songs you like and translate every lyrics of the song using your dictionary,in the process, you will learn many new words, you will be able to sing along and learn new sentence patterns(句型) and word phrases。If you have a passion(激情) for music, use it to improve you english ! you will find it interesting and stimulating(刺激)。

Your favorite song

Do know the lyrics of an english song?you don't have to recite the whole song;just share one or two lines with the class, what is the song about? Why do you like it so much? Was that why you memorized the lyrics?

tip three

When you watch a movie ,leave the english subtitles on .If you only undertand between 30% to 40% of a movie with the subtitles off.you will not benefit much since you will miss out on many jokes and important details.

Turning the subtitles off won't help you learn new word and phrases.nor it will help you improve your grammer.you will not be able to pick up what you don't understand ..so leave them on until you can understand more.\

tip four

Watching with the english subtitles on could be to your advantage.Listening and reading at the same time can help you establish important sound-spelling connections(eg:you hear "shoulda" and read "should have")  by showing you how native speaker link.weaken or "swallow" shouds.on the other hand ,if you read subtitles in your mother tongue, you  could pick up more phrases and will understand more.

can you think of other word exaplems where a word sounds different from the way we spell it?

tip five

Learn to ask relevant(相关的) questions about the text you are reading .the movie you are watching or the song you are listening to ,for example:

  • " What didi he mean by ' I wish.....'? "
  • ”Oh,so it is not more happy,it's happier!“
  • " Hey,I saw that word in class last week!"
  • " What do they keep saying regardless? what does that mean?"

To really enhance(提高) your listening and understanding.you need to train your eyes and ears to pay attention to both what is said and how it is said.

It takes practice. Most of people focus on the message only.Learning a language is the ability to acquire(获得) another skill.Don't get discouraged, you are much smarter than you think. In the beginning. It may be difficult to apply(实行) these five tips, but practice makes perfect.
