Up in the Air-8

Natalie’s first try.
  • I gotta grab this. I’ll meet you at the car rental(租车).

  • I was hoping I’d hear from you.

  • I’m in Hotlanta, and I need a rib-joint(牛排餐厅) recommend bad.

  • Fat Matt’s. Bring a bib(围嘴).

  • You never called.

  • Well, I wasn’t sure what was appropriate.

  • Appropriate? Ryan, I’m not some waitress you banged in a snowstorm. That word has no place in our vocabulary(字典). I am the woman that you don’t have to worry about.

  • Sounds like a trap(陷阱).

  • Listen, the next time that you’re worried about manners, don’t. If you wanna call, call. Just think of me as yourself, only with a vagina.

  • When am I gonna see you?

  • How long’s your layover(中转)? They got multiples into SDF. Think you could push?

  • All you have to do today is watch and listen. And when I talk about a strategy packet(建议册子), hand them one of those.

  • I wish I were here with better news, the fact is that you and I are sitting here today, because this will be your last week of employment at this company.

  • What am I supposed to do now?

  • Am I supposed to feel better that I’m not the only one losing my job?

  • This is ridiculous! I have been a fine employee for over 10 years, and this is the way you treat me.

  • How do you sleep at night, man? How? How’s your family? They sleeping well at night?

  • Not me. No, my kids, we’re not gonna do anything.

  • Perhaps you’re underestimating(低估) the positive effect that your career transition can have on your children.

  • The positive effect? I make about 90 grand a year now. Unemployment is what, 250 bucks a week? Is that one of your positive effects?

  • Well, we’ll get to be cozier(舒适的), because I’m not gonna be able to pay my mortgage(贷款) on my house. So, maybe we can move into one nice fucking one-bedroom apartment somewhere.

  • And I guess without benefits, I’ll be able to hold my daughter as she, you know, suffers from her asthma that I won’t be able to afford the medication for.

  • Well, tests have shown that children under moderate trauma(适度创伤) have a tendency to apply themselves(专心致志) academically as a method of coping(处理).

  • Go fuck yourself. That’s what my kids will think.

  • Your children’s admiration is important to you?

  • Well, I doubt they ever admired you, Bob.

  • What do you suggest I tell them?

  • Hey, asshole, aren’t you supposed to be consoling(安慰) me?

  • I’m not a shrink(心理学家), Bob. I’m a wake-up call(叫醒服务). You know why kids love athletes?

  • Your resume says that you minored in(兼修) French culinary arts.(烹饪)

  • Most students, they work on the fryer at KFC, but you bussed tables at II Picador to support yourself. And then you get out of college and you come and you work here.

  • I see guys who work at the same company for their entire lives, guys exactly like you.

  • They clock in, they clock out, and they never have a moment of happiness.

  • You have an opportunity here, Bob. This is a rebirth.

Based on the following story, continue the story by writing two paragraphs, paragraph 1 beginning with "A few weeks later, I went to the farm again. " and paragraph 2 beginning with "I was just about to leave when the hummingbird appeared."respectively with 150 words. I was invited to a cookout on an old friend's farm in western Washington. I parked my car outside the farm and walked past a milking house which had apparently not been used in many years.A noise at a window caught my attention,so I entered it. It was a hummingbird, desperately trying to escape. She was covered in spider-webs and was barely able to move her wings. She ceased her struggle the instant I picked her up. With the bird in my cupped hand, I looked around to see how she had gotten in. The broken window glass was the likely answer. I stuffed a piece of cloth into the hole and took her outside, closing the door securely behind me. When I opened my hand, the bird did not fly away; she sat looking at me with her bright eyes.I removed the sticky spider-webs that covered her head and wings. Still, she made no attempt to fly.Perhaps she had been struggling against the window too long and was too tired? Or too thirsty? As I carried her up the blackberry-lined path toward my car where I kept a water bottle, she began to move. I stopped, and she soon took wing but did not immediately fly away. Hovering, she approached within six inches of my face. For a very long moment, this tiny creature looked into my eyes, turning her head from side to side. Then she flew quickly out of sight. During the cookout, I told my hosts about the hummingbird incident. They promised to fix the window. As I was departing, my friends walked me to my car. I was standing by the car when a hummingbird flew to the center of our group and began hovering. She turned from person to person until she came to me. She again looked directly into my eyes, then let out a squeaking call and was gone. For a moment, all were speechless. Then someone said, “She must have come to say good-bye.”
