x – extract a archive file.
t – viewing content of archive file.
f – filename of archive file.
v – show the progress of archive file.
j – filter archive through bzip2.
z – filter archive through gzip.
r – append or update files or directories to existing archive file.
W – Verify a archive file.
wildcards – Specify patterns in unix tar command.

1. tar file

# create
tar -cf xxx.tar /path/to/compress
# view contents
tar -tvf xxx.tar
# extract
## extract to current folder
tar -xf xxx.tar
## extract to a different folder
tar -xf xxx.tar -C /path/to/extract/to 

2. tar.gz

# create
tar -czf xxx.tar.gz /path/to/compress
# view contents
tar -tvzf xxx.tar.gz
# extract
## extract to current folder
tar -xzf xxx.tar.gz
## extract to a different folder
tar -xzf xxx.tar.gz -C /path/to/extract/to
