Chester's Paralympic torchbearers announced

PARALYMPIC torch bearers from Chester who will carry the flame when it arrives in the region have been announced.

A total of seven inspirational Chester residents between the ages of 13 and 62, have been selected to take part in the relay this weekend in nearby Ellesmere Port.

As part of the celebrations, a flame procession will take place from 10.30am at the Sainsbury car park at Cheshire Oaks, along Stanney Lane to the EPIC Leisure Centre, and then on to West Cheshire College campus.

The main event will then take place at the Sutton Way campus from 1pm, and will feature fencing demonstrations by wheelchair fencer Adrian Derbyshire; performances by IndepenDance, Cheshire Dance and Samba Drumming; accessible cycling; Activate Arts; boccia and netball demonstrations provided by Ellesmere Port and Neston Special Olympics Branch Athletes; The Celtic Warriors versus RGK Sporting Club Rhinos wheelchair basketball; Mascot Race; as well as a bouncy castle, face painting and a special guest from Chester Zoo.

College principal Sara Mogel said: are delighted that 30 local people will be flamebearers. Every one of them is an inspiration to others who live their lives by the Paralympic values. I hope members of the community will come along on Saturday and support them during this memorable event.

Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWaC) executive member for culture and recreation, Cllr Stuart Parker said: Paralympics are an opportunity to see some of the most inspirational people in the world compete in sport and for Ellesmere Port to take centre stage in welcoming the games to the UK is fantastic.

Flamebearers from Chester include:

Lorraine Booth, 50, from Chester, has worked as a volunteer for Chester Terrapins (a specialist swimming club for people with disabilities) for 27 years and organises the club annual social events and holiday camp.

Emma Davis, 17, from Upton, Chester, was nominated after she overcame her nervousness about starting at West Cheshire College using her individual learning plan. She has completed numerous work placements at college and has now got a voluntary job at a charity shop.

Lynda Hesketh, from Chester, is the founding member of Chester Adult Phab, a social group integrating people with and without disabilities.

In 2012 the club was awarded The Queen Award for Voluntary Services (MBE for volunteer groups).

June Jarvis, 62, from Elton, Chester, is an official speaker for The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association and active member of the Royal Chester Rowing Club. In her spare time June attends pilates and loves baking, recently creating her brother wedding cake.

Callum Jones, 13, from Hoole, Chester, was born with cerebral palsy and has had various operations and hurdles to overcome.

Corrina Thorley, 51, from Elton, Chester, is a volunteer for the Ellesmere Port Chester and Neston Special Olympics and is passionate about providing activities for individuals with a disability to help them achieve their best.

Jenny Wilson, 15, from Waverton, Chester, is passionate about wheelchair basketball and Wholesale Jerseys China plays for The Manchester Mavericks.

She campaigned for the inclusion of wheelchair basketball at her school and local community and was successful in raising for the purchase of specialist sports wheelchairs.
