SIGMOD 2007&VLDB 2007

SIGMOD2007在北京举行，有幸跑去免费听了若干讲座（汗，大部分没有听懂，只一个tutorial听得还算可以），但见到了数据库领域的若干大牛 ，感受到了顶级学术会议的氛围。。。

VLDB 2007在奥地利维也纳举行，老板去了，安排我到网站上下ppt，一直没有出来。。

浏览VLDB2007网站时，看到了PHD WORKSHOP的介绍，联想到了听SIGMOD WORKSHOP的情景。

其实参加这个WORKSHOP的门槛很低，很多人被SIGMOD的大名吓倒了。。下面这段VLDB WORKSHOP的介绍很有价值。。。

The VLDB PhD workshop is a forum for PhD students working in the broad areas addressed by the VLDB conference itself. This forum aims at facilitating interactions among PhD students and at stimulating feedback from more experienced researchers

对博士生而言，不但能与其他博士生共勉，更能得到专家的点评和鼓励（太重要了，至少能严重增加信心）

We particularly encourage students that are somewhere in the middle of their research to submit to this workshop. They should be more or less clear about the problem they want to target and have first ideas on how to solve it. We are explicitly not looking for people who just started or are already close to finishing up their PhD research.

只需要处于研究中间阶段的文章，希望能在明年或者后年试一下

Along these lines and because participating in this workshop is also thought to be a means to get first "direct" experiences with the international database community, active participation is restricted to people who have not yet published their research in one of the major conferences in the field (like VLDB, SIGMOD, EDBT, ICDE) or respective journals.

必须没有在主要的国际会议上发表过文章的博士生，这是为了为博士生提供对学术顶级会议的第一次亲密接触

Any topic covered by the VLDB conference is acceptable. Obviously, submissions must be single-author, but the name of the supervisor should also be mentioned. Some sort of web publication of accepted papers is planned.

Papers should clearly describe a problem, explain why it is important, detail what the existing solutions are and why they are not sufficient, and give some indication of new solutions the student is pursuing. There should be enough substance to provide discussion, but the work does not need to be complete

The Program Committee for this workshop consists mainly of distinguished researchers who have obtained their PhDs not too long ago. Members of the Program Committee as well as some senior professors will attend the PhD workshop. Every accepted paper will be read by 2-3 members of this accompanying group who will then be particularly prepared to give feedback.

Paper presentations will be limited to 25 minutes, with 20 additional minutes for discussion. Consistently with the objective of last year's VLDB PhD workshop, we hope to revive the original idea of a "workshop" - the dictionary says "a meeting for concerted discussion or activity". It should be a lively, exciting event. We will also try to organize some social events for all participants, to allow for further interaction.
