We use -[NSWorkspace runningApplications]. It requires 10.6 or higher.

void SendQuitToProcess(NSString* named)

        {
            [app terminate];
        }
    }

otherwise, you'll have to use AppleScript. You can do something corny like this:

    system(temp);
}
