Q: My customer has a significant investment of 32-bit servers and wants to know why Hyper-V won’t be developed for Windows Server 2008 32-bit editions.

 

A: Developing Hyper-V for Windows Server 2008 32-bit editions would have required making numerous unacceptable compromises in terms of scalability and performance. Even today with Microsoft Virtual Server 2005, we hit our head on the 32-bit ceiling all the time. For example, when running Virtual Server R2 (32-bit) on Windows Server 2003 (32-bit) on a large server we’re lucky to be able to run approximately 30 virtual machines. However, when running Virtual Server R2 SP1 x64 on Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition on a large server,we’re been able to successfully run over two hundred of virtual machines concurrently.

 

For customers that have significant investments in 32-bit (x86) systems and would like to use those for virtualization, they can use Microsoft Virtual Server on Windows Server 2003 (which will be supported through the end of 2014) and then migrate those virtual machines to Hyper-V and Windows Server 2008 when it’s business appropriate.

 

Q: Will Hyper-V support 32-bit and 64-bit virtual machines?                                                                                                     

A: YES, Hyper-V will support running 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x64) guests and yes you can run them at the same time on the same server.

 

Q: Will Hyper-V run on the Itanium platform?

 
A: No. Hyper-V is a feature of Windows Server 2008 x64 Editions and will not run on the Itanium platform. There are no plans to develop virtualization for the Itanium platform.
