report on "user interface design". on Oct 10th

On October 10^th,Accompanied by warm applause Professor James Foley, who is a member of National Academy of Engineering, and a Fellow of AAAS，ACMand IEEE, gave us another lecture on ”user interface design”. I had aimpression on UI designs and gained a knowledge of how to evaluate designs. Computer Graphics is very significant in our life so that we should attach importance to the subject and develop it.

During the lecture, he gave a description on “why is HCI?”. HCI involves the study, planning, design and use of interaction between people and computer. People always  choose what they like. Humans interact with computers in many ways, and the interface between humans and the computers they use is crucial to facilitating this interaction. He introduce Google glass to us which attracted us. He shows some functions of Google glass, such as Search, photos ,videos and making a call.

Next,when  you plan a project, you should know thy users. UI design should fit in overall software because people should interact with computer. You should analyze thy users in many aspects like skills and culture. Moreover, that how to evaluate is also a good question. “Looksgood to me” is not the way and it should be measured by time and other things. Besides, he make a comparison between the essential use case and use case.

 In addition, when we design the UI interface, weshould get inside user’s heads! Sometimes it may need to be attractive with more humor. For example, Facebook has more fun than emails. we should focus on groups without being utilitarian. Now, brainstorm is a tendency and no idea is a bad idea. All ideas are on the table so that we should communicate with others.

In conclusion,from the content spoken by Professor, we can learn about the significance of UIdesign. HCI (Human Computer Interaction) aims to improve the interactions between users and computers by making computers more usable and receptive to users' needs. Google is successful because it has many groups devoted into UI design. So group is important and it is time to create your own ideas by  communicating with others. In future, when I will design user interface, I will focus on user’sneed instead of my own ideas.
