Hello,
What is meant by 'Bounce' the database. I keep coming across the phrase.
Usually after changing some parameter/setting, the paper/manual will ask us
to 'bounce' the database (i guess, instead of shutting down the database and
restarting it).
How do we bounce the database.
Thanks,
Tom

Careful. Somebody said that 'bounce' means to 'shutdown abort' and restart.
This is not necessarily correct. Shutdown abort should NOT be used unless
absolutely necessary. Most shutdowns can be accomplished with a 'shutdown
immediate' (shutdown normal will wait for certain activities to finish which
may delay your shutdown too much). 'shutdown abort' will not issue a
checkpoint and will not synchronize all the data and control file headers.
when you restart the database after a shutdown abort it will perform 'media
recovery' and resychronize everything. if you have problems doing a
shutdown immediate then go ahead and do a shutdown abort.
