According to Homer (Odyssey iv:412), Mennelaus was becalmed on his journey home from the Trojan War. He wanted to propitiate the gods and return safely home. He was told that he should capture Proteus and force him to reveal the answer.

Although Proteus transformed to a lion, a serpent, a leopard, water and also a tree, Mennelaus then succeeded in holding him as he emerged from the sea to sleep among the seals. Proteus was finally compelled to answer to him truthfully.

根据荷马（Homer）史诗《奥德赛》（Odyssey）第四本第四百一十二行记录，墨涅拉奥斯（Mennelaus）在从特洛伊战争（Trojan War）中返回家乡时，被阻在了路上。为了取悦众神以平安回家，他被告知，必须抓住普罗透斯（Proteus），并强迫后者告诉他如何保平安。
虽然普罗透斯变化成了狮子，巨蛇，豹，水和大树，墨涅拉奥斯最终还是在海边的海豹群中抓住了他，并最终知晓了自己安全回家的方法。
