1. unless 除非
- unless = if … not … / except if …
- You can’t come in unless you have a ticket. = You can’t come in if you don’t have a ticket. = You can’t come in except if you have a ticket.
- Unless I’m very tired, I go to bed about midnight. = Except if I’m very tired, I go to bed about midnight. = If I am not very tired, I go to bed about midnight.
2. in case
- I wrote down her address in case I forget it.
- I’ve bought a chicken in case your mother stays to lunch.
- in case … should …
- I’ve bought a chiken in case your mother should stay to lunch.
- I wrote down her address in case I should forget it.
in case 与 if 的区别
- I’ll buy a bottle of wine in case Roger comes.
- I’ll buy a bottle of wine if Roger comes 这里表示我还没买, Roger 来了我再买,if 是条件,条件先发生后再做
3. if only / I wish
- If only I knew more people.
- I wish I was better looking.
- I wish this damned car would start.
- If only it would stop raining.
- I wish I hadn’t said that
- If only she hadn’t told the police, everything would be all right.
4. It’s time / would rather
- It’s time to do …
- It’s time to go out.
- would rather do… = would prefer do …
- would rather / prefer sb to do …
- I’d rather stay in.
- It’s time I had a haircut.
- I’d rather they came tomorrow, not today.
5. if … will …
-
- If you will follow me, I’ll show you to the waiting room.
- If you would just wait here for a moment, I’ll see if she’s free. will 变为 would 后会更加委婉,你在这稍微等一下,我去看下她有没有时间。
-
② 可以表示 “结果” = if this will happen as a result.
- We can come tomorrow evening instead if it will make things easier.
- I’ll give up smoking if it will make you happy.
- I’ll feel better if I will give up smoking. I’ll give up smoking if I will feel better.
- I don’t know if Jack will be home for supper.
6. if it wasn’t/weren’t for … 、 if it hadn’t been for …
- without … (this fact things), … would be
- have been different.
- But for …
- If it hadn’t been for your help, I would have been in trouble.
- It is wasn’t for your help, I would be in trouble. 用 weren’t 更加正式,是对现在的虚拟 = Without your help, I would be in trouble. = But for …
- If it had not been for Tom, it difficult to know what they would have done.
- Without Tom, it difficult to know what they would have done. = But for …
7. if + 形容词
-
- if necessary / if any / if anything / if ever / if possible / if in doubt
-
- 1.去掉 if
- 2.提前 had / were / should 等标志词
-
If I had realized the situation, I would have informed the police.
Had I realized the situation, I would have informed the police. -
If she were my daughter, I would insist that she behave properly.
Were she my daughter, I would insist that she behave properly. -
对将来的虚拟:were to do / should do
If anyone should object, they must be told to put their complaint in writing.
Should anyone object, they must be told to put their complaint in writing.
