① Cats never fail to fascinate human beings. ② They can be friendly and affectionate towards humans, but they lead mysterious lives of their own as well. ③ They never become submissive like dogs and horses. ④ As a result, humans have learned to respect feline independence. ⑤ Most cats remain suspicious of humans all their lives. ⑥ One of the things that fascinates us most about cats is the popular belief that they have nine lives. ⑦ Apparently, there is a good deal of truth in this idea. ⑧ A cat’s ability to survive falls is based on fact.

猫总能引起人们的极大兴趣。它们可以对人友好，充满柔情。但是，它们又有自己神秘的生活方式。它们从不像狗和马一样变得那么顺从。结果是人们已经学会尊重猫的独立性。在它们的一生中，大多数猫都对人存有戒心。最使我们感兴趣的一件事情就是一种通俗的信念——猫有九条命。显然，这种说法里面包含着许多真实性。猫在跌落时能够大难不死是有事实作为依据的。

• fail to do sth：字面意思直译是“失败地做了某事”其实也就是：没能做成某事。文章中前面加了一个never，相当于双重否定，也就是：做某事从未失手。
• fascinate：V. /ˈfæsɪneɪt/ 使着迷，使神魂颠倒
  • It was a question that had fascinated him since he was a boy. 这是他自幼就着迷的问题。
  • 形容词 fascinating（迷人的；吸引人的；使人神魂颠倒的）我们用得比较多 a fascinating story/subject 迷人的故事；趣味无穷的话题
• be friendly and affectionate towards humans：对人类友善且充满柔情。
  • ① affectionate adj. /əˈfekʃənət/ showing caring feelings and love for sb 表示关爱的
  • ② 这里的 towards 也可以用 to 来替换。
• mysterious lives of their own：有它们自己神秘的生活方式。
  • ① lead + adj+ lives :过着…样的生活。lead 在这里就是过…生活的意思。 She led a normal, happy life with her sister and brother. 她和弟弟妹妹过着平常和幸福的生活。
  • ② of one’s own:(属于）某人自己的。
• submissive：adj. [səbˈmɪsɪv] 顺从的；服从的；柔顺的 She followed him like a submissive child. 她对他百依百顺，像个听话的孩子。
• respect feline independence:尊重猫咪的独立性。
  • feline：adj. /ˈfiːlaɪn/ 猫似的；猫科动物的 She walks with feline grace. 她步履轻盈。
• remain suspicious of: 对…保持戒心。

  • most 是副词 much 的最高级形式，修饰谓语动词 fascinate
• the popular belief…: 通俗的观念… 熟词僻意 popular 在这里是不是我们熟悉的”受欢迎的“而是 普遍的；大众的 比如说：a popular misconception 普遍的错误观念
• a good deal of truth：大量的真实性。a good deal of 表示大量的…= a great deal of ，后接不可数名词。
• ability to survive falls：从高处落下而不死的能力。① survive ：v. 幸存；幸免于难；艰难度过 Many birds didn’t survive the severe winter. 很多鸟死于这次严冬。另外，这个词还有” to live or exist longer than sb/sth 比…活（或存在）的时间长“的意思
  • She survived her husband by ten years. 丈夫死后她又活了十年。
  • survive /səˈvaɪv/ v.（经历事故、战争或疾病后）活下来，幸存；比……活得久，比……长寿；挺过，艰难度过；幸免于难，留存；（靠很少的钱）继续维持生活；设法对付（困难或令人不愉快的事）

• yet conj. 但是；然而 因为是连词，所以后面可以加句子，这段两个yet的用法一样。
• die from：死于 (尤指死于意外事故或疾病、情感以外的原因) 注意区分：die of: 死于某种疾病或者情感（夸张说法） Her father and her brothers would die of shame. 她的父亲和兄弟们会羞愧死的。
• is the ideal place for：是…的理想之地

• drop：在这里是名词，迅速下降 的意思。 He was prepared to take a drop in wages. 他准备好了接受一次工资的快速下调。
• reach speeds of：达到…样的速度
• stretch out：伸出（伸展）四肢。
• air-resistance 这个组合词应该很好猜意思吧。air 是空气 resistance是阻力，air-resistance 就是空气阻力啦。
