HW 01    Fundamental Statistics and Two-Sample t Tests

Instructions.

● You are encouraged to discuss problems with classmates, but all work you submit must be your own.

● If applicable, any plots should have appropriate axis and overall labels.

● In general,  do  not  include  computer output  (either  SPSS  or  R)  in  your  write-up. Instead, summarize relevant points using text, tables, or plots.

● When in doubt about formatting issues (e.g., for references, tables, notes, etc.), use APA style.

Data.

For this homework, you will need to enter the data by hand into excel and SPSS.

● The data for group 1 are as follows: 68, 64, 72, 79, 79, 74, 67, and 69.

● The data for group 2 are as follows: 74, 77, 79, 82, 64, 91, 85, 79, and 89.

● Double check your data entry: n1 = 8 and Σ =1 X1i = 572; n HUDM 5123 - Linear Models and Experimental Design HW 01Java 2 = 9 and Σ =1 X2i  = 720

Tasks.

Here's a list of tasks once the data is entered correctly:

1.  In SPSS, run Student's and Welch's versions of independent-samples t tests and inter- pret the results. No need to check assumptions for this dataset.

2. Enter the data into an Excel spreadsheet (example is shown in "2. HW_01_template.xlsx"). Then calculate and report the sum and mean of data by group.

3.  Create a column of deviations from the mean and then create a column of squared deviations.  Use the latter to calculate the variance and SD for each group.  Report your results.

4.  Calculate the standard errors (SEs) for both Student's version and Welch's version of the t test. 

 

5.  Calculate and report the degrees of freedom (df) for each test.

6.  Calculate and report the t statistics and p-values for each test.

7.  Comment on the results of Student's t vs Welch's t in relation to the group sample sizes and the group variances
