We all simultaneously occupy the space above a giant celestial generator. In its outer core, flowing liquid metal creates electric currents that when combined with its natural rotation around the sun it creates a magnetic field encompassing its entire surface. Without the Earth’s electromagnetic field, copious amounts of cosmic radiation would blast us into extinction.

Talking about anything involving radiation can bring up thoughts of mutations, skeletons brightening like glow-sticks, and B-movie monsters accompanied by the screams of a cliche damsel.

For certain people, it’s chilling that we come in first-hand contact with all sorts of devices that emit different electromagnetic frequencies. Our cellphones, wifi routers, and 5G towers create various wavelengths invisibly coexisting in the atmosphere we are involuntarily exposed to as a part of our digitally connected colonies.

But are these electromagnetic fields actually harmful to our health? Do the phones in our pockets oven-bake our ovaries and make tater tots out of our testicles? Let's check the science!

(The Science!)

Electromagnetic energy can be split into two factions: ionizing and non-ionizing. Visible light takes a spot between these two.

Non-ionizing radiation contains longer waves and is not powerful enough to cause any health concerns to the human body. Radiators of this type with their own bank of frequencies include television, cellphones, radar, GPS, and radio.

Ionizing radiation contains properties that can cause potential damage to our genetic makeup. This includes sunlight, x-rays, gamma rays, and cosmic rays. The more powerful of this side of the spectrum has extremely short wavelengths and high photon energies which has the capability of taking electrons and kicking them out of atoms. Like Dave Mustaine out of Metallica.

With the distinction of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, it would seem that you are just as likely to get cancer from 5G as you are from your Himalayan Salt Lamp. But what makes 5G a subject that attracts capitalist conspiracy claims?

Telec'mon (Telec’mon)

Fiber optic cables used to be the most used method for transmitting quantities of communicative information and led the way for the invention of the internet. When the need for wireless data transmission came about, cellular networks had to be implemented.

In 1979, the first generation cellular network (1G) was developed in Tokyo. Since then the standard for cellular networks was upgraded with smaller wavelengths for each succeeding generation. This is because increasing speeds is nearly impossible to do without adding new frequencies.

The ranges for increasing frequencies for cellular networks include ultra-high frequency (UHF), super high frequency (SHF), and extra high frequency (EHF). I don't understand the difference between ultra, super, and extra. But according to the logic presented if there was a guy named Extraman he would beat Superman’s ass.

The units used below are hertz (Hz) and bits per second (bps). The number of hertz is equivalent to the number of wave cycles per second. Bps is used to measure data transfer rates and checking internet speeds. I know that units can get tricky and people confuse the order of prefixes to denote quantities.

The order is kilo-(10³), mega-(10⁶), giga-(10⁹), then tera-(10¹²). I created a mnemonic device to make it easier to remember. Kiss My Girlfriend’s Teacher. If you can come up with a better one let me know. The only other one I came up with is Karl Marx’s Grandma is a Triceratops.

ķISS M Y G ^ irlfriend氏T eacher。

Ultra-High Frequency

超高频

▹ 1G (1979): 150 MHz

▹1G(1979):150 MHz

▹ 2G (1993): 450 MHz with 250 Kbps

▹2G(1993):450 MHz,250 Kbps

Super High Frequency

超高频

▹ 3G (2001): 450 MHz — 3 GHz with 200 Kbps — 3 Mbps

▹3G(2001):450 MHz — 3 GHz,200 Kbps — 3 Mbps

▹ 4G (2009): 3GHz with 3 Mbps — 1 Gbps

▹4G(2009):3 GHz,3 Mbps — 1 Gbps

Extra-High Frequency

超高频

▹ 5G (2019): 600 MHz — 90 GHz with 1 Gbps — 10 Gbps

▹5G(2019):600 MHz — 90 GHz,1 Gbps — 10 Gbps

While 3G made it possible to send emails by phone and 4G introduced streaming, 5G has the capability to help coordinate fleets of automated cars and drones on a city-wide scale. But having extra-high frequencies comes with its disadvantages.

The higher a frequency is the more it is easily absorbed by obstructions. It’s why we have shadows and why walking around the radio doesn’t affect the signal. Radio waves are long enough to go through the human body. Without your knowledge or consent, Mr. Brightside is beamed through your internal organs dozens of times daily.

Technologies that use extra-high frequencies are considered to be using millimeter waves. This includes radar and airport screening equipment. In the case of 5G millimeter waves, its frequencies are easily disrupted by buildings, trees, and even rain. It’s also why when you reheat your leftovers, the waves don't travel through the microwave door and reheat your face. For you to benefit from the millimeter waves you would have to be practically touching a 5G tower. This is why a nationwide 5G plan would have to take advantage of the 600 MHz frequency range.

So if 5G at its most powerful is easily defeated by the rain, how can it pierce through our skulls and turn our brains into chocolate pudding?

(Mm..Pudding)

Conspiracies surrounding electromagnetic fields tend to equate the frequencies of cellular networks to that of gamma rays and x-rays. Your cell towers are penetrating your body, creating friction between your cells, disbands your DNA, and breaks chemical bonds.

There are people that believe that it also affects the migration patterns for birds, but hopefully those people meet up somewhere away from the people that believe birds are actually government drones.

There are individuals that are increasingly reporting health problems attributed to electromagnetic field emitters. This condition is known as electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS). This condition includes headaches, fatigue, poor memory, reduced concentration, and nausea. You know, the symptoms for basically everything.

这种情况称为电磁超敏React(EHS)。

The World Health Organization even has a page about the condition on its website. They’ve also gone on to say that no research backs the fact that low-level electromagnetic fields can cause the health defects connected to EHS. Double-blind studies have shown no relation to electromagnetic frequencies at all. But it is still considered a real syndrome. Makes me want to say WHO cares.

There is also a rising market in EMF blockers. This includes fashionable hats, phone cases, tents, and many more designed to shield you from finding out what is actually wrong with you. But if people feel safe from their own wifi by laying inside of carbonite coffins they purchased from a vendor banking off of their delusions then that is up to them.

Innovations in technology plus a vague understanding of the science behind them creates fear. Irrational claims from the public continue to arise because science is a field that constantly corrects itself through testing and is never complete in doing so. The day in which science is complete would be a day that all scientists dread.

So maybe it is best to keep an open mind about this subject with reference to the basic science behind it. While you do that, I’ll be watching the seagulls at the beach trying to take my food in order to supply my DNA to the Pentagon.
