This is a recent design challenge which allowed me to progress through to the next round of interviews for a product designer role. There was no time limit specified but it took me longer than most design challenges I’ve done: around 2.5 days. I wouldn’t normally recommend spending this amount of time on a design challenge—it could easily have been delivered at a much lower fidelity, but testing showed a need to explore navigation and visual signposting in a higher fidelity and I was interested in learning from the results.
I’ve found looking at other people’s processes for design exercises very useful (shoutout to Pol Kuijken, Luke Jones and Chrysan Tung’s excellent articles) so I thought I would share my approach to this challenge in case it might be helpful. I learned a lot from doing this particular exercise: when I received the challenge I had no idea whether I was going to be able to come up with anything, but I ended up having a lot of fun with it. Taking these methodical steps helped me to get there so feel the fear and do it anyway!
(The challenge)
- Design an app prototype which allows a user to communicate with another person speaking a different language as seamlessly as possible using a ‘walkie-talkie’ interaction (one person speaks and then the other person speaks).
- Make sure this interaction does not mimic other translation apps on the market.
(Questions and assumptions)
I kicked off the challenge by writing down all my questions and assumptions from the brief.
Through writing these out I could see the research tools I needed to use to fill in the gaps in my knowledge, plus I could see the questions I needed to ask the company who set the task for extra clarification.

Every spoken language would be available—Though this is currently not the case for translation apps on the market I decided to make my solution more flexible so that it was open to the speed of technological advancements in the field.

研究 (Research)
(Competitor research)
Initial thoughts around reasons to communicate with someone in a different language allowed me to focus my research on apps that satisfied these needs. I noticed a potential opportunity in the market for a translation app for kids—I couldn’t find many of these at all. ‘Slowly’, a penpal app targeted at adults, had extremely high user ratings and engagement. The nostalgia of speaking to people from different countries as a young person seemed real; this suggested a potential opportunity to introduce the experience to a younger audience.
However, a gap in the market alone is not enough. What could be the value of providing a ‘walkie-talkie’ interaction to young people?
(The opportunity)
Talking to someone from a different country allows for the speaker to be an immediate expert on their own way of life, helping aid conversational confidence. Hiccups in communication are expected, lowering pressure and providing the perfect space for young people to feel at ease.
Going back to my initial assumptions list helped me reflect that, when thinking about what a natural or seamless conversation consists of, some of my thoughts were very ableist.
Conversation challenges for young people with autism, ADHD and some other mental health problems can include struggling to wait to talk at the appropriate moment or having difficulties reading body language. A ‘walkie-talkie’ interaction would remove these barriers and provide a comfortable space to develop social skills and make friends.
(Company research)
I had discovered a potential opportunity in the market but as a product designer I needed to show that the idea fit into the business and technical goals of the company.
The company creates translation products for businesses using machine translation and AI. Its wider goal is to stop speaking a foreign language being a barrier to communication.
Huge market — young people love their phones. According to Ofcom’s Media Use and Attitudes report of the UK (2017), 83% of 12–15 year-olds own a smartphone and it is the device they claim they would miss the most. App use is high: 74% of respondents have a social media profile and 77% play games on their phones. Additionally, disorders which can affect social interaction are widespread. For example, in the UK more than 1 in 100 people are somewhere on the autism spectrum. By answering accessibility needs, the app’s potential reach and appeal could be far wider.
Company values — the app would help young people communicate more effectively with foreign language speakers. It could also help remove other barriers to understanding, positioning the company as a key player in the facilitation of communication as technology advances.
And most importantly …
Data — as an AI-driven company, processing quality data is essential. Younger age groups could provide a wider selection of language patterns and vocabulary with which to train neural networks. Also, users with social difficulties could potentially produce a richer variety of interaction data. This might help ensure future translation results are not biased in the favour of those without any social challenges.
(User research)
How was I going to integrate speaking to someone in a different language into an application and make it relevant to young users?
I spoke with Thomas, a 12 year-old phone app user from Manchester, to understand current pain points in his life. I also wanted to explore his contact with foreign language speakers and discover any struggles he might have with communicating.
Key findings were:
A phone app is appropriate—Thomas’s friends have phones and frequently use apps on them. These are mainly social and gaming apps.
Curious about the world—Thomas enjoys learning about other countries and cultures. He has a friend at school that moved from Belgium to the UK and likes to chat with her about it. He is also interested in working in Japan one day.
Social connections—Thomas likes to meet new people who have similar interests. His friendship group is involved in a scheme to welcome new students to his school.
(How to help the user)
(Thomas’s problem)
Thomas is incredibly competitive but also very chatty and sociable. He has had to quit sporting activities in the past because they have taken over too much of his life and prevented him from hanging out with friends. He also believes he is addicted to Fortnite and realises that playing it takes up a huge amount of his time.
I wrote a problem statement to help focus my solutions, to think about the app in the context of Thomas’s life and to be as strategic with my time as possible:
“Thomas is trying to find the time to socialise with friends and meet new people but can get caught up in his competitive gaming and sporting commitments. This makes him feel frustrated and trapped.”
(Ideas)
I then created a ‘how might we’ statement to further narrow the scope of my ideas:
“How might we reward Thomas for being sociable in a game rather than for being competitive?”
I felt that the idea of nurturing an avatar through socialising seemed like the most positive and sustainable way of promoting chatting to international friends over a long-term period.
(Creating the solution)
头像 (The avatar)
The avatar needed to encapsulate both the app’s concept and the company I was designing for, to create a consistent brand experience.
I decided on an octopus because they can travel to different countries, are very intelligent, can recognise different people and produce ink — another tool of communication.
I also learned that 2/3rds of an octopus’s neurons are in their arms. Looking at how octopuses move and behave inspired many ideas about how interaction patterns could work within the app in a way that was unique from competitors.
(The flow)
Before going anywhere near a computer I sketched out some quick flows for the ideal path I wanted a user to take within the app and edited them until I was happy with the basic structure. I then moved this flow into a low-fidelity prototype.
(Taking the app from low to high fidelity)
I tracked down a company style guide online and set up all the fonts and colours as layer styles in Sketch to ensure implementation was speedy. I wanted the app to fit into the company’s current product family but also appeal to a younger audience as a stand-alone consumer product.
Given that I was tight on time I tested the low-fidelity prototype on 3 testers and the high-fidelity prototype on 2 testers.
Interaction explanation — I wanted to make the editing process as seamless and playful as possible so I came up with a way of live drawing around words to edit them. It also tied nicely into referencing the intelligent arms of an octopus and suited Thomas’s love for the simple finger movements within many Ketchapp games. Users found this to be unclear at low fidelity. At high fidelity the explanation was vastly improved but ‘add’ for inserting words was still unclear so this is something I would develop further in later iterations, perhaps during onboarding.
Confusing buttons — Initially I trialled a smart button that would grow different branches according to the needs in the moment, again mirroring the many arms of the octopus. Users found this confusing so I changed this to a simpler interaction and high fidelity testers responded well to it.
Signposting with colour and graphic elements— In lower fidelity there were no visual indicators of where you were in the app. I experimented with colour and graphic signposting to aid users in their journey. This approach worked well and navigation through the app improved dramatically.

(With more time…)
Interviews—I would have interviewed more young people, including those with social challenges, to get a richer variety of user insights and validate decisions further. This would be the top priority moving forward.
Testing—Testing on 2 people is not ideal. Testing the prototype on at least 5 young people, including some with communication challenges, before the next iteration round would be the next step.
Including developers, marketers, product managers, etc.—Getting technical, business and marketing opinions during all stages of product development is crucial so I would do this ASAP.
(What I learned)
Plan—Writing out all my assumptions and questions allowed me to be strategic with my research under the time constraints and uncover unexpected topics I might not have initially thought of exploring.
Shower—I had some great ideas in the shower during this brief. Getting out, going for a walk, grabbing a coffee, or merely getting out of my chair all helped me to be more efficient with ideation.
Make assumptions and move forward — In an ideal world most of the stages I went through could have been explored and validated in much greater depth. As this was a design challenge I had to move fast and make quick decisions. I made sure, however, that I could justify each of these when I presented my work.
I am still relatively new to design challenges and I always love to hear tips and feedback on improving my approach. Please comment below and share your thoughts or connect with me on Linkedin.
