How the test works

A few tips just before we start the test: It is strongly recommended to use Headphones. A good HiFi System is ok, but small multimedia boxes add to much of their own distortion. You have to compare two samples: one is the pure linear signal, the other is the the loudspeaker output with enhanced or attenuated distortion. We don't tell you which sample is the distorted one - click "Sample A" or "Sample B" to play them, then make your choice. It is easy at the beginning - we start with strongly enhanced distortion. If you recognize the distorted sample correctly, we'll make it harder. If you are wrong, we'll go back a few steps. How far can you go down? Sorry - there is no "I don't know" option. If you are not sure, trust your intuition. You can hear more than you think, so we force you to take a choice. The test takes a few extra steps to weed out "good luck guesses".

An easy example:
Click on the "Sample A" and "Sample B" button, and tell us which is the distorted one. (distortion is highly enhanced here) Note: if you don't see two buttons "Sample A" and "Sample B", or a "loading..." sign or you need to install Macromedia Flash 6 Loading the sound files might take a few seconds on a slow connection - while the test is running we preload them to make it faster. Tips:

Trust your feelings! Near your audibility threshold, you can't tell the difference for sure anymore. That's perfectly ok with the test. The test is easier when you listen at higher loudness - but still keep it comfortable for you. Repeat the test to train your ear
