Before submission potential contributors are asked to read the editor’s 2008 Editorial titled “On Principles of Scholarly Research Contributions: How to Avoid Multiple Cycles of Reviews” (available on the journal website here).

Please disclose potential conflicts of interest if any.

Please provide their name, affiliation, email address, and h-index from either Web of Science or Google Scholar Citations as a Word file. This will indicate whether the authors are familiar with the latest development in the field and their paper extends the state-of-the-art.

7) The Conscientious Reviewer form (available on the journal web site here) for each author (except students) as a Word file. Journal contributors automatically become a member of the Society of CACAIE. There is no membership fee but they commit to provide detailed reviews for papers submitted to the journal as the journal reviewers are often chosen among contributors to the journal. This is how thoughtful and detailed reviews are obtained in a timely fashion (guidelines available on the journal web site here).

8) A confirmation to pay $350 per figure for figures that must be printed in color in order to convey the intended information unambiguously.

9) A Similarity Report using iThenticate or other Similarity Checking software where the similarity to any other archival publication is indicated as a percentage. We require the similarity to any other archival source to be less than 1%.

Manuscript preparation

Authors should consult a recent issue of the journal for style and layout if possible.The title page should contain the title, author(s) name(s) and affiliation(s), including a complete address for correspondence and proofs. When a graduate student/PostDoc or a junior researcher is the co-author of a manuscript we ask the professor/advisor to submit it and be the corresponding author because he/she is in an experienced position to appreciate issues of originality, copyright assignment, and the high standard of publication of rigorously peer-reviewed research journals. Each paper should be provided with an abstract of 100-150 words, reporting concisely on the purpose and results of the paper. The title of the paper should unambiguously reflect its contents. The title of the paper should not exceed 70 characters including blank spaces. Please avoid using abbreviations in the title. The Editor reserves the right to adjust style to certain standards of uniformity.

The SI system should be used for all scientific and laboratory data; if, in certain instances, it is necessary to quote other units, these should be added in parentheses. Temperatures should be given in degrees Celsius. The unit 'billion' (109 in America, 1012 in Europe) is ambiguous and should not be used.

The journal will consider for review articles previously available as preprints. Authors may also post the submitted version of a manuscript to a preprint server at any time. References should be cited at the appropriate point in the text by the last name of the author followed by the year of publication in parentheses. A list of references in alphabetical order should appear at the end of the paper without numbers. All references in this list should be cited at some point in the text and vice versa. Unpublished data or private communications should not appear in the list. Examples of layout of references are given below.

Line drawings may be submitted in any medium providing that the image is black and very sharp. They should preferably all require the same degree of reduction; large diagrams, more than four times final size, are discouraged due to handling difficulties. The type area of the journal is 177 mm wide x 240 mm deep, in two columns per page, each 85 mm wide, and lettering should therefore be large enough to be legible after reduction of the illustration to fit (ideally 7 pt lettering after reduction). Figures submitted in color will be published in color in the online journal at no cost. The color figures have to convey the intended information in black and white unambiguously. Color figures will be published in color in the print journal only if the author can pay for the additional cost of printing in color through his/her own research sponsor or other sources.

On Principles of Scholarly Research Contributions: How to Avoid Multiple Rounds of Reviews

About a quarter of the papers submitted for possible publication in the journal are rejected without being sent out to reviewers based on my preliminary evaluation. Of those papers sent to reviewers and finally accepted in the journal about 80% receive at least two full cycles of reviews. Over the past 22 years I have learned reviewers and editors waste a lot of time unnecessarily because some authors do not follow a few basic principles of scholarly authorship and contributions. Here are some pointers on how to avoid multiple cycles of reviews and to increase the likelihood of acceptance based on one round of reviews only.

1. Define clearly what research problem you are solving. Keep in mind CACAIE is a rigorously peerreviewed research journal devoted to publication of original computational contributions and new discoveries.

2. Present succinctly a review of the work done in the same area. The focus of CACAIE is new computational modeling. In general, using commercial packages will not make an original scientific contribution. We strive to publish papers presenting models not existing in any existing commercial packages or solutions for problems that cannot be solved by any of the existing commercial packages. If an existing commercial package can do it then it has been solved! Existing commercial packages are great for solving consulting problems but normally do not lead to new scientific contributions.

9. A lot of manuscripts still present small/overly simplified examples or academic exercises. Such papers were common and might have been appropriate in the 60’s, 70’s, or 80’s. But, in the 21st century we would like to encourage authors to present large and realistic engineering examples. Please consider whether examples presented in the paper are appropriate and justified considering the significant advances made in computational modeling in recent years as well as the increasing power of computers.

We ask every author to provide a statement that this manuscript is their “original unpublished work and the manuscript or any variation of it has not been submitted to another publication previously.” If your paper was submitted to another journal and was rejected or withdrawn you must state that in your cover letter and explain the circumstances accurately. In general, we do not consider such papers because a) we want CACAIE to be the authors’ first choice for obvious reasons and b) such papers will most probably be rejected considering the journal’s low rate of acceptance which hovers around 35%. Occasionally I entertain requests for exceptions when the authors are up front and provide a valid reason. In that case I normally request to see a copy of the reviews the authors received from the other publication. In one particular case, for example, the reviewers of the other journal had rejected the paper because they had found it to be too advanced and mathematical for the audience of that journal.

Before submitting your manuscript, put yourself in the shoes of the reviewers and consider the following questions because reviewers will be asking the same questions:
