Based on about analysis, we can conclude that the performance of pre-increment and post-increment is essentially identical for fundamental types.

However, things change for class types. Let's take the commonly-used STL iterator as example

vector<int > items;

vector<int >::iterator itr = items.begin();

itr++;

The code of "itr++" is

_Myt operator ++(int )

{ // postincrement

_Myt _Tmp = *this ;

++*this ;

return (_Tmp);

}

while for ++itr,

_Myt& operator ++()

{ // preincrement

++(*(_Mybase *)this );

return (*this );

}

Obviously, post-increment is based on pre-increment, surplus with constructing a temporary instance to store the original value of instance. Therefore, the performance of post-increment is doutlessly worse than that of pre-increment in this case.

In conclusion, we suggest developer get into a habit of using pre-increment. Certainly, there are exceptions where post-increment is the only choice. But it is out of topic of this article.
